Non-athletic students are not getting paid “NIL” to attend UH. I have no problems with scholarships as that is a student aspect, just the pay to play then transfer if they don’t get paid enough is my issue. Once you are paid (beyond scholarships and such), there is another level of responsibility. I do not see them as only students at that point. Similar with a student on work-study. If they have a job to do (maintain printers, answer questions at a desk, etc…), I expect them to do it without my support as a fellow student. I will support their student aspect, but not going to do their job for them.
Student athletes busting their arses without additional large sums of money earned my respect for their efforts. (and my donations to scholarship funds)
I also don’t follow professional sports as I do not relate to multi-millionaires and billionaires arguing for more money when prices are already outrageous for an average person.
Some of them are. There are certainly students at UH outside of the AD that are social media influencers and are, accordingly, compensated (monetarily or otherwise) for using their platform (very literally including their name, image, and likeness) to promote brands or otherwise generate revenue. And some of these students are recieving aid from non-athletic scholarship funds as well.
Hell, even stuff like OnlyFans falls under NIL regulation.
Note that I put NIL in quotes. If athletes were making money off their social media accounts or appearing in actual commercials, I am fine with it. But they are being paid to play or at least just sign with a school. Simple as that. Outside of a select few research students, students are not paid to attend outside of their scholarship coverage and sometimes research stipend (which athletes also get).
I’m selling my season tickets if possible and will not renew unless Dana gets fired at the end of the season.I’m tired of wasting time watching a terrible product on the field.
For what it’s worth, the Band also gets paid to play for Basketball and Volleyball, last I checked. I can’t find numbers at UH, but it seems like at most P5 schools, it’s a couple hundred per game.
At the end of the day, the student-athletes are working on furthering their future career path, same as any other student. They’re also performing work for the school, and being paid market value for that work. As with anyone else, they’re free to transfer to another school if they feel like it will help secure a better future. The only real difference between them and the rest of the student body is that the market value of their labor is higher, and honestly, for most positions on the team, I’m not sure how much more they make than any other student with a full-time job.
Yeah I mean it’s nice to have fans support you no matter what. I guess they need to learn life isn’t fair at some point though.
What is also nice for them is a $100K+ scholarship plus whatever they are getting in NIL individually plus swag, food, etc… All these players should be looking at their own play and the terrible coaching/school leadership decisions setting them back and not the fans.
The player’s tweet or insta or whatever he sent that on is just an emotional post that is worthless. Y’all got talk to your coaches about doing their part bruh.
Players should look at what they’re doing or not doing before worrying about whether the coaches are doing a good job. I’m certain they aren’t being coached to miss blocks, throw away 4th down passes, drop east catches, and whatnot.
We do have guys out there playing at a high level, and I’ll keep showing up to watch them …. if I can stomach the rest of ‘em.
I buy tickets. I tailgate. I show up. I left early, because it was clear we were done. Not going to apologize for it either. If we were halfway in the game, I would have stayed. Do better. Fans have to show up, but it’s coaches and players job to keep us engrossed in the game.
I wanted to sleep on this before responding. I am 100% with you Giena but here is where the main issue is for me.
CDH keeps blaming his players. He has created this malaise.
He did not do it once but it is now the fourth or fifth time that he has done so. He is also blaming the fans. I can’t remember one HC with this attitude. Instead of blaming his players on National tv he should look at himself in the mirror.
You can’t put together a decent OL in five years?
That is 100% on CDH. He recruits and coaches the players. What is he best at? It has to be said. Blaming his players. On the other hand you have players giving their all like your son and I am sure many others. CDH job is to coach and recruit. TCU lost a ton of players. They are rebuilding. CDH knew our OL had to improve. So far utsa, rice o roni and tcu have moved us around at will. This is why people are upset. We have waited since the mid 90’s to be back in a power conference and CDH blames his players?
I do believe DH is a good/great OC but he has me convinced that he does not have what it takes to be a HC.

I very seriously doubt an actual football player wrote that
They may have, but I’d gather that “someone within FB” talking in third person about “the student athletes” would presumably not be a player. If I had to guess, I’d guess it’s a trainer or equipment manager or someone else down on the sidelines.
And, I did the same thing as this player, only, I sent my email to Pezman last week and to Madame Khator this week. My message was a little different though.
