Game 1: Houston vs Lehigh. 7PM CBSSN

You said those guys are way above our freshmen. Based on one game?

I don’t disagree, but it’s hard to get double digit rebounds when you’re out defending on the 3 point line

Yes. It may sound premature but Peat, Dybantsa and Peterson are already great college players. They dominated their games. Maybe our guys can get there, but they are not at that level yet

That may very well happen but who knows? It was one game with different circumstances and coaching in each game. Their ability can’t be judged on just that game.

I’m really excited about Sharp making that jump to being a legit scorer and not just outside shooting threat. He looked Sasser smooth imo.

Different systems, coaches, etc. Coach Sampson is not going to unleash these kids until they prove they can do great things on defense and take decent shots. I truly thought the shots taken by our four freshmen were all good shots, but Sampson’s road map is covered with defense, and that is where a few fell short.
We are going to lose more games than we did last year, but I expect us as a team to start peaking at the right time. I would not trade our team for any other…

I think it’s also what’s going to be expected of the freshmen. Peat, Burries, Peterson, Dybansta are going to be expected to carry loads in major ways for their teams.

Our freshmen are going to be expected to contribute in their roles maybe have great game here and there but not to carry the loads like the other freshmen.

Did I see JoJo last night sink a 3, shooting from his ear?

Yep!

He’s got a decent shot, he just doesn’t need to fall in love with it. But if they decide to give him 15ft of cushion and he got that at a 35% or so clip it’ll be an awesome weapon to have.

Just a general observation.

Not sure how you police that kind of selfishness The promo did indicate a certain number of towels would be available to the first arrivals. The tables appeared to be monitored by students or athletic dept. personnel. If someone is so greedy and selfish, how do you stop them. The monitors can ask but I am sure the they are told to not to be confrontational.

The promo was designed to get people there early and helped make it work.

Have people hand them out, instead of just standing there and hoping nobody takes it?

One thing is for sure.

Florida apparently ain’t #3.

I’m sure they’re not after taking a loss. They looked good to me though. There’s no shame in losing to Arizona

Having a big physical team to lean on can be an advantage early in the season. Zona still needs to find shooters and depth.

Omens of things to come? Flemings took UH’s first shot - a 3 pointer from the corner, and made it! Cenac’s first shot, a 3 pointer, was also good. Lots of talent on display. It’s only going to get better.

Don’t let the box score numbers fool you. Harwell had the highest defensive box plus minus number on the team, and the second highest overall box plus minus behind E-Man. He was all over the floor diving for loose balls, and a menace defensively.

His offense will come along as he recovers from injury, but he is already a ā€œSampson guyā€ on the defensive end. When healthy he will be one of the best ā€œ3 and Dā€ wings in America.

I sure hope that’s true. I was keeping an eye on him and noticed his effort. Kind of reminded me of Ramon Walker, although clearly he needs time to be groomed by Sampson and Co. It was actually fun watching Sampson chew his butt for letting the Lehigh guard go to the right.

And yeah, he’s still recovering from injury, so I expect him to get better and better on both sides of the court. The one 3-pointer he hit looked beautiful. Once he gains more confidence, I think he’ll become another scoring option along with McCarty.

I know the media keeps talking about the three returning starters from last year, but we can’t ignore just how young the rest of the team is. McCarty is a redshirt freshman, Miller barely saw the court last year, and we have 3 true freshmen playing significant minutes. I really don’t expect us to be good in November or December.

Once the young guys start to pick up the system I think the team has a chance to be really good. Maybe not F4 good but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a great season. They could also be F4 good as well.

With that said, I don’t see us going through the B12 unscathed like last year. Losing a true inside presence like Roberts, a knockdown 3-point shooter like Cryer, along with a defensive specialists in Wilson and Francis, were huge losses. The offense without Roberts and Cryer isn’t the same. We really need one of the young guns to add another perimeter threat, and I would love to see either Sahko or even Lath become a defensive presence down on the block.

Speaking of young players, I can’t wait to get McFarland back to see what he can do. Adding another shot blocker and shooter would be huge.

3/20 and 7/21 from 3 vs MSU and Lehigh. Surely that picks up. Definitely gonna miss the LJ 3s though.

Just speculation, but I would think of a lot of the poor shooting is just getting back into game shape, which is just different than anything else. Even just looking at Lehigh, the entire team shot the ball really well right from the tip, but then fell off as legs got tired from playing our brand of defense. Game conditioning will get better, and so will the shooting.
