What was with the Mormon bashing from that school?
Referring to which school? The most recent alleged chant came from Oklahoma state, their president is doing a review/investigation on it.
āF the Mormonsā chant is very common, especially on the west coast in the pac 12 schools. Unfortunately itās making its way into the Midwest schools as well. Stanford in particular mocks BYU for their Mormon beliefs.
A couple thoughtsā¦
-
BYU fans in general view the āf wordā as a bad word. Mormons generally view that word as disrespectful and potentially hateful. The counter to that is that I donāt believe students chanting āF the Mormonsā mean anything by it.
-
Members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are extra on edge this year because of the Michigan church shooting and fire and a few other shootings and church related crime. Colorado had a very strong contingent beyond just students doing anti Mormon chants and the next day there was the Michigan shooting. Then at the BYU Cincinnati game a few weeks later their were byu fans that were members of the congregation that got shot up that had some level of PTSD when Cincy fans chanted f the Mormons and shared their story on social media.
-
Mormons at large (including the majority of byu fans) donāt understand why itās okay to chant anti Mormon chants or even produce anti Mormon plays (like the Book of Mormon play on broadway) when you donāt hear f the Catholics or f the blacks. (Both obviously wrong to chant)
-
Finally, now byu fans are making it a bigger deal than they should. Honestly, ta not going to be fixed by BYU fans. It has to be other people who acknowledge it shouldnāt be happening. I am not a Drake Toll fan in general, but I appreciate that he stands up for the LDS church and byu fans.
This is a post that shares the schools that have chanted that at byu fans pre Oklahoma state.
My own thoughts is that it is sad that I cannot travel to away games with our chants or individuals saying anti Mormon stuff to me. Itās not every school, but happens a lot.
As my kids grow up I will probably stop traveling to away games until they are teens and understand whatās happening with the chants.
I donāt expect the chants to stop. I donāt want there to be limits on freedom of speech from the conference even if it breaks the conferenceās policy. I donāt want penalties or whatever.
@RezClone these are my most recent thoughts now that itās been a while since we talked
Young last year spent a decent amount of his time downplaying Houston. Downplayed our defense as good. Downplayed that going into Fertitta was different than a home game, etc. Always seems to throw in just a little pot shot that might go unnoticed if you arenāt paying that much attention. And then we boatraced them out of the building twice

I drew my own conclusions
Traveling fans are always subjected to hostile environments and to a degree that is to be expected and is okay. What is not okay is to be harassed and made to feel unsafe. It seems to me that one should behave as good hosts and make visitors feel welcomed. Mi casa es tu casa mentality otherwise this will become like South American soccer with violent hooligans and angry mobs.
I donāt travel much to away games, but one of the few Iāve been to was in 2016 when we played at Navy. Everyone in the stadium was very gracious and accommodating- I left with an appreciation and respect towards Navy and their fans.
BYU goes over the top on this, and I think that adds to the frustration for BYU fans.
Agree with all your thoughts. I will add, Iāve never sat by anyone who was rude or disrespectful. **that being said, I have like a guide I follow on how to be a good visiting fan
Your very 1st point is pretty universal. The obvious exception is when a new football coach is making a speech at a basketball game vs a hated in-state rival, then the use of the F word can only be described as laudable, admirable, and uplifiting!
I kid I kid. Love Jimmy Rogers already!
No, I think most people at least kind of have a visceral uncomfortable reaction to that word being chanted in arenas in public in any context. You kind of have to consicously choose to process it in a way that makes it no so bad, because the knee jerk natural reaction is always kind of like āGeesh, ew.ā Lol
The bolded part Iāll agree and expand on as if Iām trying put myself in their non-BYU shoes and play devilās advocate.
I donāt necessarily believe they are trying to be bigoted in a particularly religious way, anymore than they would normally be (youngsters tend to be at least flirtatious with atheism or agnosticism at that age in general, to varying degrees. Itās kind of trendy and also I really think itās kind of pushed on them in a number of ways subconsciously. Donāt banish this post, this isnāt political lol)
That is to say their default is to be relatively irreverent or dismissive of the sanctity of anything, but itās not necessarily always like particularly hateful or hostileā¦especially in purely an anti-mormon specific kind of way. [This is not my best work, but I think you get what Iām getting at].
Now, IDK if this is better or not, or if itās even true. BUT i think they mean it way more like the way kids would be like picking on nerds. Like ācheck out these dorks who donāt XYZ even tho we think those things are not a big deal!ā Etc etc. People do think and say the same things about like Baylor or TCU for example. I hear it all the time. The weird part that I CANT explain is, itās not chanted in unison as far as I know. That part I totally understand why a BYU fan would think thatās an important and undermining detail that must mean worse intentions. I get that 110%
Certainly thatās not universal or maybe even not accurate? But idk thatās just kind of the vibe I get. Thatās not to say that the way BYU fans who are most offended or upset shouldnāt feel the way the do. Just wanna be clear on that.
But maybe there is an oddly secular aspect to it that is getting lost in translation? Idk. Itās a weird situation and not good either way.
I thought everyone viewed it as such.
Let Dybantsa get his stats but we need to shut their guards down.
Plus they can score in bunches so we cannot have a late game scoring drought.
In general, agree with everything you said.
Even when BYU was being disrespectful to Utah in this moment it was āLetās go cougars.ā Pretty nasty and vulgar.
[
Perhaps so. I was just going by its universality. But I can definitely be wrong.
Lol truly a better breed of person. Thatās my stance!
What about TT whole stadium chanting heās a pu$$y at people on foul line, should be an automatic technical foul on home team, this world is out of control
I wish colleges were all secular. Would make things much easier.
Only LDS person that Iāve befriended told me the M word is a pejorative. Are you writing it on your post for the benefit of it being a known nomenclature or is its usage not as rude to LDS folks as I had been previously made aware?
If there is 15 minutes to go in the game and UH has been on fire and is up by 17 points, I am still nervous and expecting a run by BYU to close the gap. The BYU crowd brings great energy that will fuel the team. This is where UH has to turn up the defense to high octane and play smart. Unlike some teams in the past, UH has some talented bench players that could make the difference.
To win this game, UH has to stay out of foul trouble. Both teams should know in the first 5 minutes how the refs will call the game.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has asked that people donāt use the term Mormon.
Where Iām from we shorten it to āthe churchā but elsewhere I donāt know what it shortens to.
I used the term because Iām lazy and donāt want to type the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints every time.
ESPN announcers for the game:
PXP: Jon āBoogā Sciambi
Analyst: Fran Fraschilla
I think this is the first game this season that Fraschilla has called a UH game.
I am 98% sure Houston wins by double digits
Disgusting behavior IMO
It was Okie State⦠what do you expect⦠lol
