Does anyone know the history of why we have a home and away with a Sun Belt team? Seem like a very odd team to schedule in the first place and even odder to have an away trip? Did someone owe Clay Helton a favor?

I think we intend to play one G6 per year.
This seems like a respectable G6 opponent.
Might actually be our toughest non-conference game next season.

Series was scheduled almost a decade ago. Originally was gonna be played in 2020 and 2021.

I do not mind playing a G6…just not sure why we would travel to Statesboro to do it. This is a no win situation… they are a decent team with no name recognition to speak of… I really can’t think of a more obscure bowl team; the “average fan” has never heard of them.

You can do that sort of thing with a basketball road game… not sure why we would want to burn a road football game on such a low reward… high risk opponent. I would have rathered they do that with a team like Tulane or even the Mudcats…
Well the game was scheduled when those two teams were conference mates, so there’s that
Yeah but teams change these type of games all the time… now that we are in the Big 12 we should have more flexiblity to have an “appropriate” schedule. Not many P4’s are traveling to Sun Belt schools… only the ACC has been doing that type of stuff on a limited bases.
Again the games already been put off once. To cancel a series you’re usually talking about a half million dollars at least. Zero reason to do that when you’d have an extremely difficult time getting a replacement game. And honestly we haven’t earned the better than that attitude yet.

I will give mass kudos to UH if they play there without canceling. Honoring a contract is rare enough, but to show respect to a G school is even rarer.
Keep the game and play there. Remember UH was once G5 and can show to be better than the other P schools that cancel out.

UH & TCU were both once G5… maybe Memphis will give you an honorary Ph.D to get them in the P4…
I assume we’re not in any position to demand that they only play us here.
The time for that would have been COVID, when it was rescheduled. Could have gotten out of the contract then, but Pez blew that one.

Exactly. Miss State, OU, UCLA were able to come here as a G5 and we were grateful for them to do that as that was often the only marketable game some of those years.

I understand your point, but keep in mind even back in the early 2000’s and 2010’s, Houston still had some national recongition and cache. Besides, a game is Houston is often viewed as a recruiting opportunity and ability to offer alumni to attend since many of these schools have large bases in the city. None of this is true for Georgia Southern. If we wanted to scheduled a Sunbelt school I would have gone with Southern Miss for old time sake…
