Eddie Nuñez and Kelly Marchbanks were great - really answered a lot of questions and shed light on some of the things happening behind the scenes:

Until his dying day, my Dad called that the greatest college football game he ever saw.

He was in grad school at UH at the time.

That team had statement wins over Michigan State and Georgia, but also had incomprehensible losses to nobodies.

Truly hot or cold.

I distinctly remember when UH broke Archie Manning’s arm in Oxford, MS, in 1970, on way to a 24-13 loss to the Rebels. In those days only a handful of games were on the telly and I listened to the game on my transistor radio.

I was at that game in Oxford, with the UH pep band. Then toured the Rebel Fraternities in the evening since it was their homecoming.

I was at the UH vs UT game in 1976, baking in the sun. My lasting memory
Wilson Whitley, torn tear away jersey, spending most of the day in the UT backfield. Celebrated at Wurstfest in New Braunfels after the game.

Who was there for one of UH’s signature win in its history?

I was there. It was a glorious day for all Cougars. UT allowed UH fans to come out of the stands and form a spirit line. It stretched from where the team entered all the way across the field to the UH bench. I like to think that helped the team sprit for the game.

I was there a glorious day indeed I miss watching Spoon running over people

Back in the day, running backs would wear tear a way jerseys for obvious reasons. UH also had Wilson Whitley wear tear a ways. He must have gone through a half dozen jerseys that day but UT was never called for holding.

The wife and I were there in 1976, along with many friends.

It was devastation for DKR and his ‘Horns. They had minus yards rushing, setting a UT record for futility.

Afterwards went to Congress Avenue to brag vs locals, then went to New Braunfels.

My former UH roommate still has a photo of their scoreboard. 30-0!

I also was there. Marching with the UH Band.

We weren’t really a rival of UT
but every time we played them in Austin they set a new record for attendance.

I was there, and it was one of the all time great road wins because Texas had gone a very long time, 1967 or 68, i think, since they had lost a home conference game. MEMORABLE.

Tucson, I would never, ever say that the UH retired Head Coach Darrell Royal, but Royal did retire at the end of that season. Just saying

In importance, it may be offensive play of the year.

DKR knew what it would take to be competitive with UH, and was unwilling to do it. Therefore, he retired.
