Idaho?
Did you find the basketball version of this?
Entertaining list. The list lost me with Ohio St. not in Tier 1a. Nebraska in Tier 1b? The last time Nebraska finished in the AP top 10 was 2001. Is there a blue blood rule for being relevant?
Nebraska is like Indiana in Basketball.
EX blue blood
Notre Dame as well.
Also, Washington? Really?
I don’t understand this list.
Nebraska is still a legacy blue blood, but not Pitt?
Clemson had a great run, but they shouldn’t even be in this list. They are a football program in decline.
Also, Boise State? Why not TCU?
This list makes no sense
Wow…how many schools on that graphic have never won a National Championship.
Contested Championships don’t count
It takes time to earn Blue blood status. Time and a cult following. Clemson?? Boise state?? They should swap ND and Ohio State.
I would think the term blue blood in college football should only be limited to 5 schools.
Which is basically Alabama, Ohio State, USC,
OU, Notre Dame.
Although Michigan, Nebraska, and UT are knocking on the door of being top 5, they do need to knock off their rivals in the top 5.
It will be tough for Michigan to knock off Ohio State from the top 5 without Harbaugh now.
UT would have to win at least 2 more to knock off OU from the top 5.
There are 8 Blue bloods in college football.
- Texas
- Alabama
- Michigan
- Notre Dame
- Oklahoma
- USC
- Ohio State
- Nebraska (though I don’t personally consider them a blue blood anymore, most proponents still do.)
Will be interesting if Alabama remains elite post-Saban. Guy is called the GOAT for a reason, and I don’t think the Alabama brand alone will be able to keep the program’s dominance afloat
Where do you get the number 8 from unless there is a requirement that those 8 met?
Usually blue blood to anyone means the top 5.
Top 10 is too many teams to label as a blue blood but 5 is usually the consensus number.
Has nothing to do with the number 8. Most CFB analysts consider those 8 schools the unanimous Blue Bloods
That said. I personally believe Nebraska lost that status already, but Nebraska’s brand is so rich in history with the beginnings of televised college football (same with Notre Dame and Texas) which is probably why they still get blue blood status regardless if they suck
I think Alabama is the team that’s next to lose it.
Keep in mind. Pitt and Army used to be blue bloods. Even Minnesota has an argument.
I doubt Bama will lose it anytime soon.
If they didn’t lose it from the mid 90s until Saban joined, then I doubt they lose their status.
A common thing that all blue bloods like Alabama, Ohio State, USC, OU, Notre Dame have in common is that that they usually dominate their rivals in conference or main rivals for long periods of time and have at least 3+ national championships over their rivals .
Things are different with NIL and portal.
With so many gauntlet teams in the SEC, I just don’t see how Alabama will continue dominating as they have during the Saban era.
But perhaps you’re right that they will always be a blue blood regardless of how they play
Usually I have a list of what is to be considered as a blue blood.
-
National championships across different decades and different postseason formats like under BCS/NY6/AP Polls
Example: Bama, Ohio State, OU winning championships under the AP, BCS, or NY6 -
The usual dominance of your rival
Example:
Bama over Auburn/UGA/Tenn
OU over Texas/Oklahoma State
Ohio State over Michigan/Penn State
Notre Dame over USC -
Large gap of national championships over their rivals
Example:
Bama over Auburn/Georgia
OU over Texas
How is the number five any less arbitrary than the number eight?
Usually when someone mentions championship contenders or blue blood, it is easier to say the 5 teams as I have never heard of any media outlet using Top 8.
Even then most people can name 5 blue bloods easier than “8” blue bloods in football or basketball.
There is less controversy on a top 5 list rather than top 8.
Even on Coog Fans, most people use the #5 as a reference.
This isn’t MySpace where the cut off is at 8 lol.
Not to pile on Nebraska, because I wish UH had it’s kind of fan support, but is there any football program who has gotten more traction over a being relevant a generation ago, and of course, the rabid fan support? Nice to be the only game in town, uh correction, make that the entire state.
UT has averaged a little over 7 wins per year the last 10 years. That is not a Blue Blood rating!
