High School Basketball Players getting Paid $100K

NIL is a definite competitor to these type of leagues but those leagues are options for players who do not want to go to college.

And I have no problem when a kid does what is best for him or his family. I am just saying I can’t see how the league will survive unless maybe the NBA pours a lot of money into it.
I don’t and won’t follow the league. As for me it is UH, college or nothing…but that’s me…

Agree, and I don’t see how investors are going to get a positive return unless it can gain more viewers.

Even with the studs in these leagues, viewers overwhelmingly want to watch college basketball.

Well we have the AAU as a role model. A lot of deception. .

I’ve watched one of these league’s games and it did not seem like an exciting brand of basketball. It seemed like players are playing not to get hurt.

Where as a college player is playing for school pride and the fans and trying to get to the NBA.

I still don’t understand the business model and the lack of platform to actually watch live games doesn’t make sense.

I think it’s a play off of social media. Check out Overtime Elite’s instagram and tiktok pages–they are constantly pumping out content. A lot of social media is trending towards short-form content (think <2min videos) and this is the goal for the league and players. The OTE has seen decent growth on their tiktok page over the last 6 months, so they probably consider the inaugural season a success.

I know someone who signed with that and is miserable but took the money

Ive learned a lot of very pro capitalism people actually despise real life capitalism.

The market detremines your value…not your age, experience, or education level.

Can you elaborate on that? Curious from the players perspective…

Interesting, top prospect in 2024 is going to OTE but not taking a salary. He is just using NLI and is eligible for college still.

Yeah, its really amazing to me the number of people who are supposedly free-market supporters that have an issue with college athletes getting paid for their labor.

Its like they believe only certain people should benefit from capitalism.

Yeah for anyone who wants to understand how this can make money, consider that we have unattractive female starlets making $10M a year to walk around nude and or perform sexual acts on Only Fans.

That is all you need to know about the internet. Internet Porn/Adult content sites are worth 10 to 20 times more than the entire newspaper industry in the United States, and that includes NYT, Hearst, and Gannett.

God bless America!

Seems like the only difference between this and one and done is the $100K. Given how big schools wine and dine players now and the excitement of playing before big crowds and the National Championship, the NIL can get them the same $100K, why not stay in school?

Good points all. Likely these players are just not interested in college life at all. Also, since this is basketball, with the NBA now going to straight out of high school to the pros, you will see this more often. Already happens in basketball and hockey.

Football, not so much.
