I love how a thread on the current state of recruiting gets hijacked to talking about things that happened 40yrs ago.
That student trainer he fooled around with at the Fiesta Bowl in 2008 while marred can sure vouch for Major Applewhite’s #character.
Well it didn’t seem to bother UH folks when Herman brought him aboard. That certainly doesn’t mean Major is a bad person. He just made a mistake that almost cost him his marriage
did you not see funkmaster already put that in a post above or maybe putting it again makes it more impactful. Surely You can find many others like it or nah.
My response is same response I gave Funk!
No, I am not a fan of Holgo’s sideline demeanor, but let’s be clear about a couple things:
-
Major has never proven himself as a head coach. For that matter, I don’t think he’s proven himself as anything more than an average coordinator. I supported pulling the plug on his tenure after only two years when we clearly underachieved.
-
Holgo, on the other hand, coached successfully for years in the Big 12 at a school where it isn’t easy to attract top talent. He has more head coaching bona fides than any coach we’ve ever hired. Plus, he has been a genius-level OC. Those factors, in my view, buy him at least a couple head-scratching years before we put him on the hot seat.
He’s proven many times over that it was an isolated incident or he wouldn’t have been Coaching at D1 level. I think the #1 Rated Coach in NCAA or you can just put him in top 3, hired him after he left UH, so I guess he thinks highly of his character since this is second time Saban has hired Major.
Holgo needs to prove himself this year at UH. His first year at West Virginia was not good either. But that second year was great. He won 10 games and had a high scoring offense. I still have faith in Holgo just not on Tune. Tune can be a nice backup but starter I wouldn’t bet on it. I hope Holgo finds his QB recruit. Massoud sounds fine as a prospect but he was playing in NJ until his junior year. He finally played sum competition last year and he did put up numbers but he’s only a true freshman.
My favorite Tom Wilson story was about a game in the astrodome against Texas A&M. We had a DE, maybe Greg Harmon, that became injured over by their sideline. Tom Wilson went over to attend to him. He asked the player what was wrong and that player, in pain said , its my Shoulder. Tom Wilson yelled back at him laying on the field…'It’s not your F’ing legs, get the F up and run off the field."
Needless to say the A&M bench was watching this. They never did much after that and the Coogs won.
Hopefully someone can correct any of my errors.
I agree with you that Applewhite was a major flop here, no pun intended.
And I also agree Holgersen can be a big winner,
My point has been folks running down Applewhite’s affair at UT. The most important thing here is that hopefully his marriage has been saved and he learned from his exploits.
That has nothing to do with Holgersen having cursing meltdowns with his players on television.
Yes I have heard all the words but some of his antics have been childish and uncalled for.
One of the good things about being at the games is not noticing the tirades lol,
In reality he is not any worse than Herman and Orlando.
When Holgersen turns our program around I will be one of the proudest Coogs around.
Guess I am old school and think everyone should act and talk like coach Yeoman.
Golly Ned!
Let’s not forget that Applewhite as an OC had a great QB to make him look good…
BINGO!
I think Pardee had a better HC credentials than Holgo. The Gamblers were amazing offensively. Sad day when UH let him go.
We did not let him go. The Oilers hired him away.
Pardee left to coach the Oilers for much more money…if he had stayed here we would have remained very good, not had to go through the Hoss fiasco, and probably been good enough to go to the Big 12…
Saban also hired Lane Kiffin who is almost universally regarded as a jerk. Saban hires people that he thinks can help him win games, not as a character endorsement.
I knew when I read that oh so innocent question about how CDH’s recruiting was going that this is where this thread would end up. You can change the football subject line but most end up with where do you stand on CDH (love him or hate him), CMA, King, jacketgate, etc.
You have to hand it to Coogfans – consistency and never short on repeating arguments over and over and over…
Can you imagine what would be happening on the recruiting front if the fall sports fell in same boat as the spring sports…it’s crazy
Who told you UH let Pardee go instead of the Oilers hiring him away? I’m interested to know. Seriously.
HMMM . Who was the OC for Holgersen . Oh, I’ll just do it myself … 4-8 !
I’m done going over this back/forth. I find interesting hardly no comments(post) back to Peggy , who put out there like it should be put on CDH. Actually y’all did good being respectable to the few women we have come on here. I can take it just fine. For the orig poster who started the Thread, it be good if the talk went back to recruiting.
I’m not sure what this rambling post says.
