Every male automatically gets registered somehow, as opposed to either going online or filing out and sending in a postcard.
Males have to do it anyway. Might as well make it automatic. My son didnât even think about it when he turned 18. There used to be PSAs in the 70s and 80s when it was a new thing. He eventually did it 1.5 years after his 18th.
There is a 0.000000001% chance he will serve. He has too many disabilities.
Iâd be fine with 2 years of any service, be it for the community or military, but I have a feeling by the time the bill got politicked to death, it would only be for the military, and disabled kids ainât going through boot camp.
Yes, a time range would be required since, as you point out, many factors in education that may not be good to interrupt.
The costs is my big question area. I am open to listening to others thoughts on different types of service, but I did have one thought. We really do not need that many soldiers, but have a branch closer to the Army Corp of Engineers. Maybe something like an Army Peace Corp, where people are not just learning to shoot, but provide other services to other countries in place of just donating billions of dollars. Send people to help rebuild after a disaster or to train and teach in impoverished nations, etcâŠ
I think it is extremely important that young people do work wearing the flag on their arm.
Also some benefits would need to be reduced for the mandatory years to reduce costs. Have to admit that even though I have many family, friends, students and co-workers benefiting from military benefits, I do get tired of paying in my tax dollars for something I canât get any benefit from.
How other countries do itâŠ
According to the article,113 counties, including the US, have no enforced conscription.
Yeah itâs not a draft yet and wasnât it a law to register at 18 anyway? They are just making it automatic however leaving groups out which isnât fair.
However I agree that it should be everyone bc in this day and age, itâs all about equality so it has to be fair otherwise if a draft happened and didnât apply to all in that eligible range then I see kids suing to get out.
Yes it is for men. I think they tie registration to financial aid, government job eligibility and some other stuff too.
Precisely.
People are rarely prosecuted for failing to register, HOWEVER, failing to register if you are a male can make you ineligible for federal student loans and government jobs.
Now it would be automatic, so that pretty much would rule out anyone failing to do so and being deprived of various privileges under the law.
As I said, may not pass the Senate.
Also, what about women and non-binary?
Why only males?
So the Senate Sub-Committee appears to be willing to go one step further.
That said, while the Senate may block all of this, Senator Lee didnât really answer my question.
Why not women and non-binary?

Thanks Mike Lee!
Most likely because some have an older, arguably antiquated view of women. That would be my best guess. I can see that point of view, but I think your question is a valid one. If women want equality, as they should have, then they should be eligible for the draft like men. JMHO
Unlike during most of my military career, today, NO military jobs are gender specific.
Given that, I donât see why having a draft to fill all of those non-gender specific jobs shouldnât be all inclusive.
I get that point, to a degree.
Of course paying these 4 million kids $25,000/yr would be about $100 Billion year program. Not chump change.
Very likely still politically unpopular with a vocal minority who donât want the military to be anything but heterosexual males.
Considering the military budget is close to $850 billion and the government doles out about $70 billion annually in foreign aid, I donât think the number is as outrageous as it first seems.
Instead of sending a couple billion to some country that has a natural disaster, send a few thousand of people with hammers and shovels to help. The cost could be mitigated some by many adjustments to spending, and in many cases would be looked upon in a positive manner.
Not a perfect idea, but still in the works. and unlikely to ever be implemented.
Plus think about all the kids that go gangs after high school, but now would be forced to go military for a couple years.
Your side has been on automatic in Texas for decades. ![]()
I thought we did that too and that was typically factored in the couple billion but I guess it depends on the situation.
This means nothing until they actually start drafting people. If that happens then you will see some real protests.
Wow.
Senate Dems have added women to the proposed draft automatic registration bill.
Apparently Republicans are now using this against the Dems in various Senate races.
Read on.
