This why I look at Brantley and think, you been out a year and a half. You’re team is fighting for a playoff spot. These are probably your last 15 games. The franchise is paying you 6.5 million.
You should be busting it. In the lineup every night. Shoulder be damned. Is Dusty obligated to protect his shoulder so he can play golf this summer?
They’re playing like they don’t really care if they even make the playoffs. It’s like “if it happens, we’ll try to win, but if not, oh well.”
I’m sure there are lots of factors, but the manager openly talking about throwing games being OK and putting lineups together that back that up is a problem.
It’s an experienced team that knows what it takes to win the whole thing. I kind of think they look at what they have and don’t see it being enough.
Dusty is just trying to be too smart. You put your best guys on the field. You don’t let players tell you who to play. And you don’t give tenure to guys that can’t hit or throw people out.
Dusty’s lineup maneuvering has cost the Astros 8-10 games this year, at a minimum. That said, losing six out of eight in the last two weeks to the two worst teams in the league is inexcusable. …just seems like they are going through the motions.
Maybe the team is concerned about Brantley’s shoulder and they understand that playing in the playoffs could re-aggravate it. Also, Maldonado could get hurt and might not be ready for spring training. Maybe we need to let the pros handle the franchise and we slink back to our hovels safe in the knowledge that there’s a bigger picture.
If this is true, then I no longer have any respect for that guy.
He’s been a great asset for the Astros over the last several years, despite his offensive limitations. I can live with the trade-off when the overall result is high level play.
But if he’s actively trying to keep the team from improving, well, he’s a bigger asset to other organizations while getting paid by the Astros. Move on down the road.
It was reported in February he would not have accepted a back up role and requested a trade. Who would’ve wanted him I have no idea. This is why you don’t let the players make decisions. It’s coming back to bite them.
The only numbers you can look at are ERA, wins/losses, WHIP, etc. He catches the most experienced starters with the best stuff, and the last time I looked, all of the numbers pointed to Diaz doing a better job. Really, the only people who seem to think that Maldonado still has this advantage are his old buddies Framber, JV and Dusty.
Even ignoring offense, which is stupid, Maldonado’s defense has totally gone into the crapper this year. He doesn’t frame well, can’t throw anyone out, and can’t avoid passed balls.
It’s a joke. I don’t know how any clubhouse could play through this, honestly. It’s a testament to the guys that they’re even in the hunt, but it has to be like going to work with an a-hole boss that you know is going to do something stupid every day.
