I wonder what the pitcher stats look like when Diaz is behind the plate as opposed to Vazquez? It doesn’t seem like they would be good.

Of the 8 pitchers the Astros signed in the offseason, 4 of them have been DFA’d.
Neither Imai nor Burrows is better than Pearson.
So basically only Teng (as a reliever) and Lambert have been “additions.”
That’s objectively terrible.

And Javier is a total wast of a roster space….he is out of the rotation and they won’t pitch him in relief because they know he doesn’t have it anymore….meanwhile we release Pearson.
Javier looked pretty solid in relief yesterday.

Blanco looked good - some bad luck on that first HR.
And Abreu has been pretty nasty after the first batter. Touching 98 is good to see.

It’s kind of interesting/depressing that Abreu arrived on the mound in a non-pressure situation against the barely-.500, no name Marlins, initially couldn’t find the plate, and managed to turn his inning into a stressful one. At this point it would be fair to describe his role on the pitching staff as “We Don’t Have Anyone Better and We’re Paying Him Almost $6 Million”.

He was more effective than Hader.
When he first took the mound, his mechanics were all over the place and his pitches followed. After the mound visit, he got it together and would have been out of the inning quickly if Pena had made a play on what would have been a double play.

Three weeks ago, Altuve challenged an umpire’s call to load the bases with 2 outs. Next man up, Alvarez slam.
Tonight with two outs, Alvarez strikes out, but beats out a throw to 1st base when the pitch got away from the catcher. Next man up, Paredes hits a 3 run HR.
Sometimes all it takes to win are the little things like a good eye and hustle.
The common denominator….a healthy Alvarez.
