Was the Notre dame wr out of bounds when he caught the winning pass? If we had instant reply would the cougars have won?
I just want unbiased opinions as best you know.
I’m thinking instant replay would have over ruled it but I watched it on tv at a very young age but want to know your thoughts on it if you were there etc

You are correct. Chris Haines, the WR, admitted this to one of our players at an all star game afterwards.
I was sitting in the opposite end zone so I had no birds eye view, but I think the general consensus is Kris Haines was OOB.

I was there. Within 100 feet where the “catch” took place. It was not a catch. He WAS out of bounds.
Dam, so we would have won with instant replay . It’s significant bc the yr before ND killed texas 38 to 10 in the cotton bowl then if we officially won, we’d be highly ranked that yr . I’m putting it down as a win lol
The day was so miserable and to have that ending was hard to see. My key would not even fit in the car after the game. We were one of the very few to get home after the game. I had a tank.
As far as the non catch. He never got his toes inbounds. In the Daily Cougar we had a photo of linebacker #1 Bubba McGallion sitting on the field in disbelief. The whole day, coldest in Dallas history to that point, the ending just climaxed the enormous missed opportunities.
Thirteen hour drive from Dallas to Houston, on the I-45 ice skating rink.
Yes my wife and I were there. We had to break the ice off our seats in order to sit down.
As far as I recall the WR was in-bounds running down the sidelines and the UH DB drove him out of bounds . He released him and he came back onto the playing field and received a pass for a touchdown. The rule,I believe at the time, was a receiver could not come back on the field and catch a legal pass.That was the reason everyone said the ND receiver was out of bounds, but the Ref did not call it that way. I was heart broken after all the effort to get to the game. Does anyone have anything to add?

We really won but got the blue bloods always win treatment. Like when we had a first down in the UH Texas game a few yrs ago. We had a first down , clearly then the refs moved the ball back. This was that last time texas was forced to play us and it was at our stadium. I was there and it was clearly a first down. We got the blue blood treatment where they always favor them.
I’m old and my memory is iffy at best. I was there and thought the ruling was that he caught the ball inbounds while he landed out.
Our seats were on the side where that end zone was, and he was definitely out of bounds. We were cheering right after the play because we all thought it was out of bounds…but the officials ruled differently.
My dad was a senior in high school when this happened and he’s like 65 now
The wife and I were there with several friends.
We could not see the WR from our location, merely the Ref signaling a TD.
We entered the fourth quarter leading 34-12. The game seemed over.
I was lucky and sat in the press box for that miserable phantom touchdown…even folks in the press box talked about it, and I was shocked when there was very little said about that catch afterwards in the press.
I also remember slipping and sliding on the icy concrete going in and out of the stadium that day, and then that long, miserable drive home to Conroe.
It was bumper to bumper all the way home and cars were slipping off I-45 by the droves.
Got home and our pipes were frozen lol…
We ended up in a National Guard armory in Corsicana when 45 was shut down.
I swore I’d never got to the Cotton Bowl again. The officials could have made an announcement to stay in town due to the highways.
And what made it worse,racist Hoss Brock.
I also was in the press box for that game. I did not have clear view of the catch. The weather was so bad, the UH Band had to exit the freeway (on the way back to Houston) and turned off in Palmer, TX. A Church opened the doors for them, so the students had some place to lie down and sleep. Thank goodness for a 4 wheel drive car. I got to the feeder road, and passed everyone stuck on I-45.
Horrible memory. So cold. Was there with all my frat brothers. Left start of 4th qtr. We were dominating and then we heard on radio while gassing up of the touchdown. To find out that it didn’t happen as well disclosed and documented, made the 9 hour drive back to Houston par for the course.
