All of you convinced me it wasn’t a catch and we should have won but again it’s the blue blood issue where ND was king in the 70s so the refs gave it to them. What’s done is done and at least we got an historic game out of it only bc ND cheated us , otherwise if we won that game it wouldn’t be talked about as much sorta like when we beat Maryland in 1976 and Nebraska in that cotton bowl back when Nebraska was like ND, a king beast monster hard to beat.

So I’ll tell a few people I know that are ND fans the truth and verbally fight with them if needed bc I now know the truth from y’all. I was just a small kid in New Orleans when it was played and I was hopping ND would win bc I wasn’t at UH or Houston at that time of course lol. However now I wished Houston won.

We can at least hang our hat on it being one of the most memorable bowl games in history bc ND won, though they cheated us. Otherwise it would be a blip on the radar like our great Maryland and Nebraska wins. Let’s look at it that way if it helps ease the pain.
It’s almost like Ali vs Forman . Ali couldn’t beat Forman strait up and did rope a dope to wear him out but Forman gets a lot of pub bc of the loss.

We get more pub out of the ND loss than if we won so it’s as good as we can get minus winning that game.

Disagree. We would have gotten much more out of a win. I don’t think you ever gain anything from losing, no matter the circumstances. Show me one thing we gained out of having that game stolen from us. Joe Montana is the one that got the most out of that game. He was given way too much credit for winning that game. The crooked referee deserves all the credit for that win.

My Father told me that Yeoman should have punted on 4th down rather than running it. That gave ND their last possession deep in our territory.

Punts in the 4th quarter went backwards when the North wind caught the football.

Had Danny Davis faked the handoff and kept the football on that running play he gets the first down and we win.

I thought about that for a long time, but with the weather like it was I think Yeoman did the right thing with the condition of the field the way it was. Give credit to Notre Dame over overcoming the elements and pulling the win, although the kid caught that last pass out of bounds lol.
Also, if I remember correctly there had already been a punt shanked and another blocked because of that icy field.
Not to mention Joe Montana was a pretty good quarterback…

I was there and agreed with going for it on fourth down.

Danny Davis botched the play by handing off. He could have faked that,kept the Football, and run for the First Down.

Of course Yeoman may have told him to do exactly that.

I think it was simply a bad read by Danny.
On the other side of the coin I remember when we beat the Aggies in College Station 17-14 in 1979 in one of the most thrilling games I ever saw in person.
The Aggies had the lead, 14-10 with time running out and were near midfield with they pulled off a bum head play having quarterback Moseley scramble around…welp the Maddogs caught him and took over the ball at near midfield and the Coogs behind back up quarterback Terry Elston led one of the most dramatic drives in UH history, with Elston stunning the Agy crowd with the game winning run to the end zone with just seconds left.
The key play in that drive was a spectacular 35-40 yard pass from Elston to a leaping Eric Herring on the sideline. BTW, that leaping catch was one of the best ever by a Cougar receiver I ever saw…great memories and what a proud moment for all the Cougars slipping on Agy tears as we left the stadium…

was there also, still get ill thinking about it. We kicked Montana’s buttocks in the first half, he came back strong in the 2nd, BUT that pass was def. out. Even CBY said “a wonderful pass and catch, too bad he was out of bounds!”

The Aggie fans shuffled out of Kyle Field in stunned silence. How quickly their jubilation turned to humiliation. - I loved it!

Me and my group went on Kyle Field after the UH win to celebrate.

The walking distance was shorter to the car, using the field as a short cut. (Wink, wink).

Back then did A&M think they were way above us and that a loss to us was shocking? I remember being in New Orleans where I grew up and would watch the scores and Houston was generally good . Even back then I liked the colors , cougar mascot and that interlocking UH logo which was great like OU. I thought and it was true that UH was a power so I’m puzzled by the Aggies thinking it was a shock. It’s sorta like the sec where peers / teams can beat you. If we were in The AAC or Cusa , I could see why but not back then.

Dan divine mentioned before the game that he thought Houston was more talented at the skill positions and more formidable than Texas. Texas just had earl Campbell to stop which ND beat 38 to 10 in the previous Cotton Bowl

I seem to remember the long snapper was also hurt during the game and why we did not punt in the Notre Dame game, but also with the wind, I also agree it was the right decision to go for it on 4th down.
