Are you kidding? A jam-packed Kyle Field with yell leaders leading “Beat the hell outta Cougar High!”

  1. Yes, Texas A&M thought, and still thinks, they are better than UH.
  2. Yes, Texas A&M was shocked they lost to UH. They were leading 14-10 late in the game, driving in UH territory to seal the vistory, when QB Mike Mosely got sacked by UH’s Mad Dog defense on 4th down. UH gets the ball to set up the winning drive.

We had tons of Aggie students behind us the whole game. They were throwing sheet and cussing us the whole game. But when Elston went in to the end zone on the winning touchdown, we turned around and most of them were already gone. Typical Aggie mentality. Tuck your tails and leave instead of facing the music.

We played great against the Aggies when we first joined the SWC…We beat their great 76 team that won 10 games, 21-10. We lost in 77, but beat them 33-0 in 78 and beat them on the road in 79, 17-14. and we beat them 17-13 in 1980…always fun playing the Aggies.

And best of all…we cost them a national title in 1956 by tying their otherwise undefeated/untied SWC champion team.

What a decade! Think about everything else that happened in the 70s. 3 out of first 4 Cotton Bowls in one hellacious conference! Welcome to Houston, SWC!

I do seem to recall people parking in odd ways between the divided highway. They didn’t seem to care what angle, front end, back end, either side or top.

I remember the visitors on the ramps whining that it was supposed to be 70 degrees and clear skies

Just think about it, had we beaten Texas at home in the Dome we would have had a great chance at winning our first national title. But gee whiz it was a great year for our Coogs and like you said, just a great decade.
Unfortunately our hoops weren’t quite as good. I think moving into the SWC actually hurt our basketball recruiting early on, but that all changed because with us in the conference everyone got better and we finally got it together in 1979 when we secured a huge committment from Milby All-America Rob Williams, and that started a gush of great recruits coming to UH…
