How are we feeling about our fans

It’s an old joke that some us dust off from time to time. Pardon me seasoned Coogs for explaining to the young-uns, but the joke dates back to Hoss Brock, Executive Director of the Cotton Bowl, who took a not so veiled shot at UH, when he said half of the UH fans ate at 7-11 and the other half robbed them.

Wasn’t that because we got in the 1985 Cotton Bowl?

If memory serves me correct, it was earlier than that. Either UH vs Notre Dame or UH vs Nebraska. I think Nebraska.

where the hell are they gonna put them with all the schools and churches on Scott?
really need to get something going downtown

Washington Ave has plenty of bars. So does downtown and Midtown.

Technically its not known if Brock said it. A paperbsaid that an anonymous bowl committee member said it and when Brock was asked about it, he said if it was said, it was probably a joke.

Here’s a great article written right before yhe 1985 Cotton Bowl abou how UH was always disrespected invthe SWC

Majority of our fans come in from the suburbs and rush out of campus as soon as the game is over.

I’m not opening a bar just to depend on people in the suburbs coming in for football and basketball games.
It’s not a sustainable revenue especially if football has a bad season which will have a heavy affect on my revenue streams.

Have you even been to the bars near Minute Maid Park or Toyota during the off-season or when the team is bad?
It is non-existent especially on a weekday game.
I went to a few weekday Rockets games this past year and my usual spot was a ghost town for pregame and this was in East Downtown.

I was watching Matt Musil last night on sports and he said that Dana had a message for the fanbase. “Do not sell your tickets”. I’m just passing it on. lol

It was the Boston College / Doug Flutie Cotton Bowl

Guessing any “bars” around the campus would be more for students than visitors from the burbs . . . . . just my guess . . . . . I’m surprised none of the student housing projects did not include some sort of entertainment, such as clubs or bars . . . . .

Most students aren’t 21 yet

Some clubs allow 18-year olds in.

Most of the students at UH are not rich kids like at those private schools or any school in a college town.
I remember when they opened up Calhoun’s Rooftop a few years after I graduated and it was only busy on gamedays then it closed down.
When The Den opened up during my junior year, I only saw it packed during the fall during the Keenum and Sumlin days since our basketball team was not good.

I remember Roxy was pretty much the spot where UH students went on Thirsty Thursdays but only allowed 18 year olds in until a certain time.

I think the stadium will be packed in red and we will destroy utsa and Rice and the tcu game will unlike anything we’ve seen since the OU game.

You are absolutely wrong about tailgating not being allowed for the Oilers but being allowed for UH games. We were threatened several times with having our vehicles towed and being arrested.

No worries, I stand corrected and I think I raised your blood pressure.

Of my three boys, two applied to UH and did not get in, although they easily got into TT and OU.

The effects of that will be seen in 40 years, in a big way!

Tx Tech is lower ranked than UH. My kids had to go to a higher ranked school than SMU (wife’s employer) or UH. They create the options.
