Again where do you live?
Also why do we have satellite campuses within 20 minute drives of the main campuses? That’s folks you never see as a result
Again where do you live?

We have 8,000 on campus and roughly 4,000 right off campus so it’s roughly 12k dorms for UH total.
We have roughly 47000k students unless you can show me the new number of 50k. So 12000 div by 47000 is 25 % of students right there. Also consider 12000 is larger that ND enrollment and many good schools sec or Acc have only 24k students. 12k is a good number. I think Scott ST is improving and if we could get a grocery store and some bars right along Scott and the rail, it would really help. It could be a small Aldi grocery store which college kids like.
Other option is a hang out or 2 near the den or Calhoun.
Record-Breaking Enrollment Sets UM Apart in 2023 - Ole Miss News.
See link on ole miss which has 24,710 students or so. Our 12k would equal half their enrollment and be 50% on campus which is a huge percent.
So we have the numbers on and off campus and nearby alums so we just need to find ways to sell out the 40k stadium which is doable. Fertitta center is sold out. The trend is to smaller venues to sell out
Post of the year!
They need to funnel the Non- traditional students to our satellite campuses because THEY DON’T CARE about being traditional students. We are trying to build a base for a traditional campus but are filling it with majority of non traditional students…WHY??
Then, target traditional students at a 80-90% clip for the main campuses. If they CANNOT attract those students IN Texas, target traditional high school students from other states/regions.
Offer them In- State tuition.
This stigma of UH ONLY being a viable option for non traditional students HAS to change.
There is ABSOLUTELY zero reasons why we can NOT be a University of Texas-Austin version 2.0!
Zere reasons.
UT was trying to go around us to build THAT HOUSTON type of campus and they would hsve succeeded because of the Stigma surrounding the Univetsity of Houston.
We need to erase that stigma…and with a vengeance!
I am all for increasing our academics. This thread is about connecting all to have our stadiums sold out every game. The two are intertwined.
Enough with changing our unis every other minute of the season. This is valid for football and basketball. What kind of message does that stands for? Do Nationally recognized program do the same? The answer will be no.
Who do you want to please first?
The ones that have been the most loyal over the darkest times. This is what matters most. Embrace your history and embrace the present.
Go back and research into our data base every single alum that has graduated from decades ago. Do whatever you can to get them engaged and into the stadiums. I always read about tomorrow’s students. That’s fine but why do some of you even think about posting on Coogfans?
We have a business school, the one I graduated from. Get your heads together once and for all and build a strategy to engage your “alum rolodex” Some of you will reply with. “We tried that already” SO WHAT? Try again. Even if you get 1,000 more alums wanting to engage this will be a tremendous accomplishment. This is what it takes, hard work and keep that goal in the forefront.
i read about not being knows as a great school in our past?
Says who?
Are you going to let the tsipers lyi forever?
There is a word that starts with F and another one that end with M. You keep thinking this way about our past?
#1 shame on you
#2 you are letting the tsipers prove them right.
Go it?
Yes, they do. All the time. ![]()
Sounds like you have done some study and research into other schools that your son has selected or shortlisted. Can you list some of those schools and the specifics about the campus culture , community, and prioritized student life ? Not sure what that really means or how that is implemented
at those schools. Is that more greek life , more nearby stores, dorm floor advisors that organize
events and student competitions, etc ???
The 100 yr campus upgrades should help. More gathering places and more campus makers and less cars like traditional.
I attended UH in the late 60’s. Had intended to attend ut, but various reasons made UH more sense. Best decision I ever made. Talking with friends who did attend those other schools helped justify my decision. My classes were just as challenging as theirs…maybe more so. Cougar High was a self perpetuating myth.
My son was brought up a Coog fan. So many great times attending games together as he grew up. He chose to go away to school for a several reasons, primarily because he wanted to continue to play collegiate sports, even tho it was D3. Another factor was financial aid. Other schools offered SO much more than UH. Although we both wanted UH, it was financially irresponsible to ignore those other offers.
He is back in town now and I would put him up against any Coog fan now as far loyalty to the program. He travels better than I do to games! As parents, we need to respect their decisions (within reason) to where they want to go. But as Coog grads, we should always instill our loyalty to UH to our kids. You don’t have to go to UH to support the University.
See I don’t agree with that.
First of all, I don’t see that in our mission statement.
Second of all, while it may be true that the original CULLEN FOUNDATION charter may have said something to that effect, that same original Cullen foundation charter also called for UH to be an all-white school.
In other words……NEVER ASSUME that we should stick to what the Cullens may have wanted.
If we want to advance, we have to advance and change for the better, NOT be stuck with outdated paradigms. And if the mission and charter are an impediment, we need to change them.
The two biggest keys to that are: a) becoming a more traditional, residential, “destination” school, AND b) recruiting suburban students more heavily.
As many things in life, it often comes down to money.
I’d love to know how many applications for legacy scholarships are received. From last year
we only funded 24 if they are $1,000 each. That’s too few and too low. I wish UHAA would spend less on programs and more on legacy.
Agree there are solid reasons for our kids to go to different schools. But kudos to you and your
son for the continued support.
Hugh Roy Cullen, before he gave any money to start a Houston university was quoted as saying that the college “must always be a college for working men and women and their sons and daughters. If it were to be another rich man’s college, (he) would not have been interested.”
This same quote is literally chiseled into the E Cullen building. That’s how significant it is to the university.
I feel that UH should honor that because it makes us unique compared to other Texas universities.
I also feel that the main idea of my previous (admittedly very long) post was missed. I want the UH to become MORE selective and be more intentional about delivering a better campus experience. I even provided specific admission rates I want UH to have. So…I don’t think we disagree in principle.
Yeah, guess what?
That E Cullen was also a Dixiecrat segregationist who once called FDR’s policies “The Jew Deal.”
And the original Cullen Foundation charter restricted admission to Whites.
Based on that….do you REALLY think that we shoulld conduct our university in accordance with the wishes of the CULLENS???
I sincerely hope not.
Hopefully we’ll disregard their wishes and do something completely different, that is to say, something that won’t hold us back or limit our prestige.
Given that, let’s change in the manner that I described.
lol, what?
I’m simply taking what I felt was noble from Cullen and leaving the rest behind. The idea of educating the families of the working class is one I can get behind.
Who’s to say that we don’t have a large number of alumni who send their kids to UH. Maybe a lot of alums don’t live in the suburbs and they value their UH education for the cost effective option that it is.
law you clearly do not understand what Cullen meant. He wanted our university to have affordable tuitions. He did not want us to have prohibitive tuition cost. What is wrong with that? There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
You know what is wrong law? What is wrong is for universities increasing their tuitions because they feel they can at the detriment of every college student. We often talk about the cost of gas or groceries. This is resulting in students having to pay enormous amount of money often being in debts for decades. And for what I ask you?
Do you really think our education is better than 20 years ago? This is an opinion. You went to law school at U of H. You did not get your Bachelor from U of H. The main difference between U of H and other Texas universities is that we did not have Waldorf Astoria style buildings like you know who. And again so what?
Enough with this National ranking . A graduate is in charge of their life and how they use their diploma. This pompous attitude because one school is ranked higher than the other will help you. Really?
I am all for great classes. I am 100% against universities fleecing their students. I am a capitalist and proud of it but I also do not believe in extortion. It is inexcusable for tuition rising costs like we have seen. Will paying more for professors get us better ranking? That is utterly B.S. You have a business program/school and you follow the core of these classes. Often these same professors are life professors and have never worked a single day in the private sector. Does that make them experts? IMO they do not. A course being taught vs a real business life is 100% different.
This reminds me of sports when fundamentals have to be taught or you will never achieve the highest level. This is exactly the same. This should never meant a tuition increase.
I commuted to U of H and I still attended games both at the Astrodome and Hofheinz. Does that make me any less proud of having graduated from U of H? Absolutely not. I had classes at night. Some said that the Third Ward was terrible. I never had any issue going back to my car or walking around campus late at night. I do know the mad cows u located in Austin campus. Do you know how they got that campus? Through the puf they got it. Without the puf they would be another U of H. Funny what $B’s can do for your campus right brother? Research Dollars are a great example. Are you going to demand that you know who opens up the puf to us? Are you? If it does not happen we will always be considered at a different level that they are. The puf bankrolled them for they have today. I am so proud for what U of H has accomplished since its creation and with bread crumbs vs others.
Going back to this thread. Our alums department has to do their job and work their tails off to have these 10k’s of U of H alums to attend games and make it as attractive as possible. It takes efforts and commitment to make a change. That I want to see.
The University of Houston draws strength from its diversity to transform lives and communities through education, research, service and innovation in a real world setting. UH is an engine for discovery, conversation and change that informs and leads local, state, national and global partnerships.
To me, the part I highlighted, still echoes our original mission; just said differently. Transforming the lives of our working men and women and their sons and daughters.
Men are not perfect; adopt the good and disregard the wrong.
The challenge for UH is that we are located in an area that is still developing or struggling to develop. At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a big push for developers to create social venues around the university that would attract UH students. This may take a while.
In the meantime, UH could create a central hub of social activity inside the campus that encompasses restaurants, clubs, bars, lounges and maybe even a mini theater. Think of the UC but on a bigger scale like an entertainment plaza that is exclusively for UH students and their guests.
Just spitballing here:
A UH entertainment and social plaza could be built in the parking lot area in front of the Wellness Center (I know this would create parking headaches, but I’m just presenting a rough idea). Reconstruct the entire area into a “Cougar Kemah Broadwalk” without the rides. It would feature all the attractive features of a modern social setting unique to UH that would offer students options to dine, drink, play games or take in a movie or show. Imagine a weekend when a group of students decide to dress up and take their dates out to the plaza. They can go to the restaurant for a decent meal, then lounge next door, then walk across to a club or a movie theater, or catch a concert by a local band, then sit by a fountain and take in the rest of the evening. Again, it should be worth noting, this would be exclusive to UH students and their guests. IDs must be verified and guests must be ID’ed. Perhaps there would be a gateway before you enter, I don’t know, again, I’m just spit balling.
I hope this clarifies what I mean by investing in student life and campus culture. Admittedly, schools who do this well are often situated in small towns that cater to the university like they’re the only thing that matters. So that’s one disadvantage that UH has being in a major city. However, UH could create something unique that would show students that it is invested in their social experience while providing a safe environment to have fun on campus.
If UH takes the bold step in making the school more selective (as I mentioned in a previous post) and invests in creating a dynamic social experience for their students, I would be elated to see my son attend UH. Shoot, I’d want to move in with him.
UH has the potential to be something unique and exciting, something that would be the envy of other universities. I’ve seen glimpses of it when I attended years ago, and every now and then when I return to campus to visit. We just need a vision with the student’s college experience in mind.
Thanks, that helps me understand it better now.
In my day, the UC was the place to go, but on weekends they’d pull down the metal security gates
and lock the place up. I was annoyed by that.
What your proposing is a good idea but probably would have to be run at a loss, but subsidized by
UH. The summer and winter breaks would not provide a business enough customers over a year.
I’d prefer the venues you suggest be run by people that know how to run those businesses, but
without subsidies, they may have a hard time to turn a profit.
UH already is just as expensive or close to A&M and UT , so we already violated the affordable Cullen clause. Also we have UH downtown for the working person which didn’t exist when Cullen set us up. UH needs to evolve.
Yes, you’re exactly right. It would mostly likely run at a loss and it would definitely require some level of private investment and businesses who specialize in building social venues.
But the payoff would be a vibrant on-campus social scene that fosters an environment of belonging. Which, could potentially develop generational Coogs. That’s my hope at least.
