Damn… Chat slayed Pesik again…

Who was the better defender their freshman year between Isaiah Harwell and Jarace Walker?
As freshmen, I’d give the edge pretty clearly to Jarace Walker as the better defender overall.
Walker came into Houston Cougars men’s basketball already looking like an NBA-ready defensive forward. He could legitimately guard 1–5 in stretches, switch onto guards, protect the rim weak side, rebound at a high level, and create turnovers with his instincts and strength. A lot of draft analysts viewed him as one of the best freshman defenders in the country that year.
Isiah Harwell showed good defensive tools as a freshman too — strong frame, good effort, active hands, and the ability to stay in front of wings and guards. Scouts consistently praised him as a two-way prospect with defensive upside.
But his freshman season at Houston was more limited in role and minutes, partly because of the depth and physical demands of Kelvin Sampson’s system.
The biggest difference:
Walker was already an elite impact defender at the college level as a freshman.
Harwell projected as a very good defender but wasn’t nearly as dominant or versatile yet.
Defensive comparison by freshman year:
On-ball perimeter defense: fairly close
Help defense / rotations: Walker
Rim protection: Walker by a mile
Switching versatility: Walker
Defensive rebounding: Walker
Overall defensive impact: Walker clearly
Harwell probably had smoother offensive upside at the same age, but freshman-for-freshman defensively, Walker was on another tier.
