Although I am not a fan of Connecticut, I am happy they won on a last second shot. When I hear announcers say “Unbelievable finish!” and “How did Duke lose that game?”, it takes me back to North Carolina St. vs. UH in 1983. If UConn’s win and Duke’s choke job makes people refer less to North Carolina St. vs UH, then all is calm in my world.
Nothing will replace UH/NC State in 1983. The vaunted Phi Slamma Jamma defeated. The pain lingers. The Houston Post headline the following day read “It’s my Party and I’ll cry if I want to!”
I haven’t heard anyone refer to that game in 20 years. I’d bet 70% of this board was born after that game. The game yesterday in no way was reflective of the mismatch between UH and NCst.
Now if Santa Clara or Sienna knocked off Duke then maybe. Also my recollection is we were consensus favorites to win it all. Duke is not the consensus favorite this year.
They certainly had higher recruiting classes than UH and if you look at the way they made it to the final game and the teams they beat you will be impressed. We lost on a fluke play. Guy once said that Hakeem Olajuwon was probably the only center in America who would have run away from the basket in that sequence. Dream actually thought Bennie Anders had stolen the ball so he started running down court leaving Charles with a huge opening at the bucket.
NCS was real, but they were also very lucky…
I’m talking about the projected outcome. I’m not comparing the two teams with one another. You would have been hard pressed to find anyone on the eve of that game that thought NCst would win.
At the beginning of the tourney UH was at 3.5 to win it all. NCst was 25-1. The difference between Duke and Uconn this year was 10-1 vs 14-1. That’s just another day at the office in the tourney. Sienna’s average was about 42-1 vs Duke’s 10-1.
