What would be considered a successful season during this experiment at Tech? Yes, lots of teams have spent loads of money over the years and not won a championship. Winning the whole thing is extremely hard. Being in the conversation, conference contenders, and now securing a playoff spot would be considered success I would think. A big 12 team probably has an easier path than a P2 school, or at least that’s the perception. It’s all about increasing your odds of winning consistently. A stacked roster will do that. Problem is, that roster consistency is tricky in the NIL era
The point is to get the best possible players into your program. To downplay what Tech is doing, by saying that they will under perform is ridiculous. Who knows if they will or not? But the point is to get the players there and then have them figure it out. If these players were coming to UH, our fans wouldn’t be saying that. They would be ecstatic.
Tech’s GM usually calls Oregon the school they’re trying to emulate.
Very well said. What some seem to be missing is Tech has been clear eyed about how this year could turn out. They look at the portal and recruiting hauls as the starting point of a planned, very deliberate process they hope will change their trajectory for the foreseeable future. Tech very much intends to win this year. But win or no, they’re committed in ways that matter for the long haul.
We do have some of the best players in the country coming here next year…
This isnt a situation where Tech has gotten the best HS players in Texas to go there, and they have a strong base to build from. They have bought a lot of players with Campbell’s money. People downplay them because they have spent a century underperforming, thats who they are…securing a playoff spot? That means winning the Big 12. you know the last time Tech actually won their conference? The Border conference, in 1955. A mere 70 years ago. With Tech, it is strictly “show me”, based on their past history in FB.
I don’t begrudge Tech for what they’re doing. I agree it is funny to see the SEC lose out on some of these guys. That said, this is a lot more of a Sugar Daddy setup than some type of long term love connection. As soon as the money dries up, they are off to someone else who can give it to them.
I had to login just to like this post. TF doesn’t owe any of you an explanation for anything. And he doesn’t “have to” give anything or justify anything to anybody here.
I really don’t get they way some of you think. Thanks, Mike, for the post.
Go Coogs
Texas Tech has to overpay players to come to Lubbock, TX. Texas Tech championship pedigree? What championship pedigree? Joey McGuire a national coaching name? Nope.
NIL is a yearly bottomless pit. Every year you have to replenish the pit. There is always a team that will force you to overpay.
Guyton reportedly making $900,000 his freshman year. Unless he gets hurt, that number only goes up next year. That is a lot of loot.
He looks so happy
That’s the issue - your literally buying a player who is only there cause the check is big -
How do you know if the play is going to match the passion?
What is the ROI?
10-2 and a playoff berth. Because of all the hype and money, the only way this is successful is if Tech turns into a “new blood” like Oregon. In today’s NCAA that means multiple playoff births, multiple conf titles, and multiple playoff wins in a 5 season span. If we go 7-5 our fan base is going to be doing backflips. If Tech goes 7-5 their fans will be upset. The money difference changes the standard.
That will probably go over well in the locker room…
Wasn’t it rumored that part of the reason Tramon Mark left was due to unhappiness over NIL differences between players…
Mark reportedly left UH because he wanted the ball in his hands more and play PG. My untrained eye thought that was not a good position for Mark, especially with Shead returning. Coach must have agreed.
Yah who knows what’s true but I recall that being the rumor as well
Are you having pork roast or maybe pork chops for dinner ? ? ? ? ?
Wow, we sure are good telling rich folks where to spend their money. TF has done a ton of good for us. We need more than one sugar daddy; we need more than a few sugar daddies. We need to have our alumni (us) get excited invite friends, neighbors to the games (maybe buy their ticket). Most of all an alumni that donates regularly, large or small to the athletic department, specify a sport or in general what ever you want. We want UH to be a big time player, let’s pretend until we make it as they say.
We DONT know. That is the whole point from a lot of our posters. We’ll see what happens when we play them this year in FB.
Campbell has spent a whole lot of money. If their fan base now expects 10+ wins a year, Big 12 championships and playoff berths, they are in for some serious disappointment. WHY? 100 years of their football history tells me so. Spending big money hasnt helped the Aggies, either. In football, Tech, they wanna be Texas, and in basketball, they wanna be Houston. But they arent.
OSU and Texas have benefitted from the model Tech is using to perfection. Everybody knows past performance is no predictor of future results.
