The SEC of TX high school football is in Southwest Dallas these days.
Duncanville, Desoto, Cedar Hill, Mansfield and Waxahachie are all in the same district.

100% agree. As an independent we were ranked as high as #4 Nationally before we accepted the SWC invite. Again and again some Coogfans posters have no clue of what we can and will achieve. Mr. John Jenkins got us to 10-1 while on probation after another probation. For U of H the sky is the limit. That is why the mad cows and atm have tried to keep us down at all cost. Even this morning the mad cows have a huge problem that we are now in the BIG12. This is not me writing this. Why do some of you think this is happening again? Lear your history friends.
The greater Houston area is a gold mine for us to finally keep at home. Will it happen? I sure hope so.
Same with the 9 high schools in Cy Fair.
Dallas, Houston, Golden Triangle…there’s talent galore…the key is having the right HC that can build the culture/program. If current guy can’t get it done bring in a hard charger full of pi$$ and vinegar, that can and will build a powerhouse. UH is a powder keg about to explode, just needs the fuse lit…LFG !!! It’s 2023, UH is in P5 now…the crying game is over, no more excuses.
I understand what he is saying. I was simply making an observation.
Although, having now driven through a lot of the city, I disagree with your comment.
The city of Houston proper is not in great shape. I am not talking about Katy, Sugarland or The Woodlands, but Houston itself.
Maybe it was the storm, or maybe since I moved to the east coast my standards have changed, but the city looks rundown.
The only parts of the city that are in fair to decent shape are Memorial/Spring Branch, Uptown and River Oaks. The number of billboards, proliferation of strip malls and fast food joints is not aesthetically pleasing.
Honestly, never thought I would say this, but what the city needs is zoning.
Looking at the team rankings we need to shoot to ultimately slot into that 20-35 window where the likes of TCU, TT, KSU, Baylor, WVU are hanging out. That would put us “talent competitive” in the Big 12. That recruiting range is basically 4-6 4-stars and a bunch of 3 stars each year. I see no reason we won’t get there now that we are in the Big 12. Sure likely all the 5 star talent and most 4 star talent will leave the Houston area but we only need to win a couple of the battles for 4 star type players per year and we aren’t obviously restricted to just Houston. I expect it to happen. If a coach can’t do it he isn’t the right coach for us.
I can’t lie, when I was at Heathrow Airport in London a few years back, the United Airlines terminal shared flights going to LA, NY, San Fran, and Houston.
I looked at all the vacation passengers for LA and NY and they were excited with joy while the passengers on the Houston flight looked depressed since a majority of that flight were people traveling for work or were sad that they only visited Houston due to relatives living here due to job opportunities.
According to 247 Sports, we have 2 - 4 star and 13 - 3 star players coming in from high school. We also have 1 - 4 star transfer along with 2 more 3 star guys. We aren’t that far off from where you think we should be. It gives me hope.
Sadly yes it does. Trust me, if you live outside of Texas and talk to non-Texans about Texas, the first cities out of their mouths are Austin and Dallas, depending on their professional field.
It hurts me to type this, but Dallas has really leapt pass Houston in terms of overall national reputation and business reputation. They get all of the major corporate relocations, and an increasingly large amount of PE and VC dollars too. Last report I saw Austin was 3rd in the nation, Dallas 5th and then Houston 10th. It also helps that one of the largest PE funds in the world, TPG, is based in Dallas, not to mention several major banks (Comerica and Beal). That all provides more capital for businesses.
I feel like Houston is still suffering from Enron and the energy bust.

More likely poor leadership at the city (and now county) level.
As far as wealth growth over the last 2 decades Houston still leads Texas in that category. People still talk about Houston around America, we have the most corporate headquarters in Houston than in any other Texas city.
Let’s not get carried away that Dallas and Austin are just ahead of Houston like that, though Dallas and Austin are growing just a bit faster than Houston but Houston still is growing.
Some Houstoians’s have a inferiority complex. Being raised DFW and have family still there, and lived here since my college days in Houston, both areas are dynamic, Houston is more cosmopolitan imo. DFW feels cookie cutter too me especially Dallas, Ft Worth not so much, it celebrates it’s western heritage. Imho
Yes, “the key is having the right HC that can build the culture/program.” And we’ve had that HC several times since the SWC died: Briles, Sumlin, and Herman. But, they all decided to take the cash and dash. Holgorsen is here for the l-o-n-g run and yet people are upset about that.
I guess that’s why Houston is #2 in Fortune 500 HQs behind only NYC.
Who cares about relocations?
Those cities have a long way to go before they catch Houston.
I’m so confused. So you’re saying that THIS is the reason why we won’t be able to recruit in the Big12?? Because of Enron and the “energy bust”? 17-18 year old kids won’t want to come play college football because they drive through a not so pretty part of town? What the F*** are we talking about here? I think some of you really over think this.
I lived in Philadelphia (east coast) and was happy to come back to Houston. I have visited New York, many times, DC, Pittsburgh and would prefer to live in Houston by far.
I always wondered why we don’t officially market ourselves as the “All Star Team of Greater Houston” HS football with select additiins outside the region/state.
Make it very exclusive to earn an offer from UH and tell every recruit that the ONLY goal is to bring a National Championship to the city of Houston, YOUR city with majority talent from the Houston metro.
Are you IN or are you OUT?
As someone who grew up in Houston and ruled out all local colleges for my undergrad, I have to assume there are many in other metro areas that want a different experience.
One thought from the different discussion here. Dallas has a specific identity which I don’t see as much of with Houston. Houston has a wide range of identities depending on where/how you are interacting with the city. That is a marketing issue.
I think there could be a similar aspect with the UH football. I think Holgerson sort of has air raid type identity, but lately, I am not sure how well that is seen. If the football team developed a strong identity and regular wins, I think that will be the best area for improvement. With the 12 team playoff, I think the biggest recruiting benefit of the Big 12 (national title access) is lessened.
Thank you - you see it like I do - live in DFW or northern Virginia and you’ll see the difference immediately - can’t describe it but I understand it
Those corporate entities drive the whole region - moving someone like State Farm in Richardson brings in a whole different type of person who will do what it takes to stand out in their new area -
Energy relocations honestly have been happening all the time here but most of those moves are west -
But again - you don’t have to drive 10 miles from downtown Dallas to find big 12 athletes - in Houston you gotta drive 20 miles to start - there was a reason Reginald sample was in demand
Not zoning…but a strict city plan with design standards and strict design review processes.
This current environment where developers can throw up garbage has to stop.
Of xourse developers will resist but Houston has past its “any type of growth phase”. We now need to control the growth.
Cities develop in layers.
They all do- even Paris, London, and New York had hideous early layers.
We can dictate that next layer.
