Introducing a new UH/Big 12 Hoops Podcast

Hey fellow Coogs, I wanted to let folks here know that a buddy and I have launched our very own podcast the No Conference for Old Men Podcast :flushed:!!! The name is an hommage to the great No Country for Old Men movie & a reference to the grind of a conference we will be joining. The Podcast is just 2 old guys talking college hoops, of course focused on our Houston Cougars 1st. But weā€™ll also be including coverage of the Big 12 conference as well as some national coverage for big games throughout the season.

This is not intended to be a money-making endeavor, itā€™s more a labor of love for both of us. Itā€™s also something to keep our brains fresh as we enter/near retirement ! As some of you may know, since I post here on occassion, Iā€™m a huge Cougars Hoops fans. So our intent is to cover only menā€™s hoops with a deeper perspective from both a coachā€™s (IowaCoog) & analytics (me) view. 1st episode is out with our preview of our 23-24 Coogs, with Episode 2 posting next week with our Big 12 Preview. Our intent is to have weekly podcasts during the season & monthly ones during the offseason.

For our 1st time out, must admit there are some rough patches where we need to improve on. But hopefully even in this episode you get a sense of what weā€™re trying to provide here. We both would really appreciate it if you all can have a listen, subscribe/download, & support the efforts (please provide feedback as well). Though not a money making effort, we would also prefer to not be embarrassed with no listeners ! But truth be told, weā€™ll keep it going if we can get even 10 to listen consistently! Original intent was to have 3 co-hosts, & came close to convincing CoogFansā€™ very own @Chiklets to join us. But understand that the time commitment is a huge ask. Instead, after we get our feet under us, we intend to have any fans here interested to join in and participate with us as a guest co-host on an ad hoc basis.

Currently available on both Spotify & Apple Podcasts, hopefully soon to be approved/posted on Google Podcasts too. Thanks in advance for everyoneā€™s consideration and support !!!

I listened to the first episode today and enjoyed it. Iā€™m very much in favor of a Coog basketball-focused podcast. Thanks for executing on this labor of love!

As far as projected starting lineup, Iā€™m thinking it will be Shead, Cryer, Dunn, Roberts, Francis. I think CKS will want Sharp as an offensive spark plug off the bench. I know a guard is a guard for CKS, but in traditional terms, Sharp is more of a 2 than a 3, which makes me give the nod to Dunn since Sharp wonā€™t be starting over Cryer. I do think Sharp and Tugler will be first off the bench for us on a regular basis.

Thx so much for the support and listening! Iā€™m in agreement with your projected starting 5, Tom my co-host is projecting Sharp instead of Dunn. Also donā€™t forget about Arceneaux, heā€™s got to be a major factor at the 2, 3, & 4 positions for us to be Final 4 hunting this season!

I would add Arceneaux and make it a trio. And he may be starting at some point. I really donā€™t see Francis piling up many minutes

Unfortunately, until I see something different I agree with you. Francisā€™s got to show that heā€™s able to stay on the floor and contribute. After some early success in the front half of the season, I felt too often he would get into early foul trouble or was invisible in the time he was on the floor.

Hereā€™s to hoping for the Roberts-like jump for Francis this season!

Arceneaux is going to have to show more than just potential. But his potential is amazing.

Ditto for Francis and he is reportedly starting.

Good luck, men!

Listened to the episode on my run this morning, helped me keep CKS in the back of my mind while running even when I wanted to stop.

Hey gang, episode 3 has been posted. Thank you all for the support and feedback, I think weā€™re getting better at this based on input you all have shared ??!!! Anyway, due to your support (which has been much more than we expected) weā€™re committed to this podcast moving forward. Thx again!

He can say a guard is a guard if he wants to, but the only guys that have played the 3 are the guys that can guard that position (shuttling inside for doubleteams and flying to the perimeter). Weā€™ll see who he thinks can handle it (and nobody else).

Dunn is one of those competitors who will greatly benefit being in this program and will but into our culture. I expect we Welkom see a much better def def and rebounder than Temple saw. I expect him to help mentor Sharp.

I think Francis will do his thing for 15-20 min per game but all that changes if Roberts picks up a couple early fouls .
So really anytime one of Francis or Roberts picks up 2 fouls in the opening half it likely means more TA and maybe Walker with small ball.

Very encouraging to hear Shead speak of the bond he and LJ have already formed.

Thx, one of the all time great movies IMO. And of course fitting of the meat grinder of a conference weā€™re entering in the Big 12 (and a nod to the 2 old guys hosting the podcast!). I donā€™t believe most folks realize how elite the Big 12 is in hoops, even better than the SEC is in football!

There are 133 teams in FBS Football, 362 teams in D1 Basketball. For this season:

12 of 14 SEC teams are in the Top 40 based on ESPN SP+ - thatā€™s top 30% in CFB.
14 of 14 SEC teams are in the Top 80 based on ESPN SP+ - thatā€™s top 60% in CFB.

8 of 14 XII teams are in the top 30 based on KenPom - thatā€™s top 8% of CBB.
14 of 14 XII teams are in the top 80 based on KenPom - every team is in the top 22% of CBB!!!

Anyway, thatā€™s the analytics geek in me. Thanks for the support with our podcast :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:!!!

Seems like yesterday there were just barely 300 teams and itā€™s up to 362?!

Holy Cow.

I know, crazy right?!!! Thatā€™s why I believe after football there will also be a big school breakaway for basketball too. Once theyā€™ve squeezed every dollar out of the CFP, the schools will realize ā€œwhy should they be sharing March Madness dollars across 362 schools?ā€ Over 1/2 of whom you could argue arenā€™t making the requisite investments to be considered in the same division of basketball.
