I saw a thread on reddit where fans all came together and brought up common misconceptions that aggravate them.
There were quite a few I didnt know about, such as Michigan fans not wanting to being referred to as “Big Blue”, Michigan State hates being called “Sparty” and that LSU doesn’t like to be called Louisiana State.
Well, for one, just like Google…you can add 1 million “O’s” and it is still the same. Coooooooogs!..Coogs! UH just has it right! Cougs just look wrong no matter how you slice it.

Have you ever called a horn a uta graduate? The reaction is priceless.
So I get it it is annoying to have it misspelled constantly. But to play devil’s advocate here, we are the ones who chose to be the kids with the weird spelled name.
So if someone is unfamiliar with us, it’s natural to write out Cougs, both Wazzu and BYU do it and it’s the shortening of the actual word. So when we see it here from a visitor I cut then a lot of slack, especially because once someone gently corrects the writer the problem is usually solved. Now after that it’s just disrespectful.
Yea. I never really got why it upsets people. It’s not like our spelling is grammatically correct or required in any way.
Now if somebody continually posts on here and uses the wrong spelling, it seems to me they’re just trying to get a rise out of some people on here.
But it’s no different from a lot of people using “TU” instead of “UT” or “ATM” instead of “A and M” or even more derogatory names. It people using Cougs bothers one, then one should be equally upset with some of our posters using “TU” or “ATM,” IMO.
Most people here are knee-jerk UT and A&M haters. As such, we would REVEL in spelling the names of those schools (or seeing other people spell them) tu and aTm, respectively.
By contrast, as COOGfans (see the name of the website), we will, as a matter of course, react differently to seeing the “Coug” spelling.

I was about to say…there is a reason some people choose a certain way of spelling. lol
Horn: I went to you-tee austin
Me: oh you went to uta?
Horn with a balled-up face at this point: not uta, that’s in Arlington.
Me pretending as if it was an accident: Oh, my bad. The abbreviations have the exact same letters!
This is of course after the fact I was asked if I graduated from “Cougar High”. Which is funny because I don’t think I’m old enough to understand the jab. Is Cougar High still a thing? Sometimes the spellings are intended jabs such as “Cougar High”, and I have no problem participating if that’s the case.
I know a B1G alum that heard a promo on the radio that said to call 713-GO-COOGS for tickets but he pointed out that his first instinct would be to call COUGS. I get why people are confused.
