It gets on my nerves when other teams' fans call us Cougs instead of Coogs

Like pronouncing Barça with a hard C.

The “misspelling” doesn’t bother me. I like the comment above about being able to add ooooo, just because Couuuuugs sounds like a bad cough. or Cooougs is someone that ran out of breath, then coughed.

Guessing this web site did not start it. Surprised there seems to be no real story behind it, except maybe to be different.

Purely from a grammar standpoint, I hate the “Coogs” spelling. But it does differentiate us from WSU which is where we got our cougar mascot from, so I have learned to accept it.

I’m in the “who cares” camp. Really? Someone legitimately spells it unlike us, correct and move on…

I disagree. I believe the website prompted the new spelling, but it isn’t a bad thing. It is what it is.

To the best of my knowledge which spans 60 years of UH sports, I didn’t never remembered the spelling of “Coogs” until Coogfans.com came into existence. Again, this isn’t a knock.

Jerry Wizig’s book, Eat 'Em Up Cougars wasn’t entitled Eat 'Em Up, Coogs!

Coogs and/or Cougs are both nicknames for Cougars.

However, when other websites (UW and BYU) began to identify themselves with the nickname Cougs, we adopted the nickname Coogs.

I like it! We should all like it.

Again, it is what it is. It shouldn’t be an issue.

The one thing that I have never gotten over is seeing other schools call us “cougar high”. Especially teams who weren’t in the SWC and have no real history with us. That is really the only thing that irks me.

Sounds about right to me! And we spell whorns “horns” too; there are many reasons for that.

Might give the impression you don’t like me or something.

I cringe so hard when I see Cougs… ESPECIALLY if it’s coming from an actual Coog.

Wait, what? That must be from t-shirt fans or something. Why would you not like being called by the official name?

I only have a problem with “Cougs” when a Coog spells it that way. What about the difference in saying UH and U of H? I thought there were some people that disliked one of those.

Also TCU fans don’t like being called the horned lizards. Even though that is the animal their mascot is. Some call the lizard “horny toads”, no body has ever called it a horned frog other than TCU.

UH or U of H? It is the University OF Houston, who doesn’t like that?

I thought it was some old school Coogs who didn’t like UH, because it is supposed to be U of H.

No objections to either “UH” (sports logo, after all), OR “U of H” (short for “University of Houston,” just like the University of Illinois is referred to as “U of I” for short).

Not sure what the objection to either one would be.

I can understand the objection to “Cougs,” simply because a) other schools already use that, AND 2) “Coogs” has, as a result, become a convention of uniqueness.

I’ve got a toboggan from the 90s given to me by some relative and most likely from Academy that is red and white but says COUGS. Hence I never wear it even when it’s cold but I still have it.

I like the spelling for Coogs, because its uniquely ours. We just have to make sure everyone knows it ours lest it be stolen, like our hand sign, I’m looking at you ASU.

How would you pronounce Doog vs Doug?

This is why phonetically it is Coog vs Coug.
