“UofH” is only when you speak but you’re supposed to write it as UH.
Woah. I’ve always said “you H”.
Wait a minute “yoo H” lol
Well thought xsmith… etymology shows “you“ is a combination of Old English “ye”, and the French word “vous.” “Cougar” is also French, hence the phonetic “oo” sound.
Guess what my degree is in…
I see what you did there!
I have a winter Hat with UH colors given to me by my wife that says COUGS.
(Youston) is how some pronounce Houston.
I consider myself a decent writer, but no thanks to breaking the English language down to sub-atomic levels. As stated earlier, respect!
Those are the people who wash their hands with cold water. How do you get “youston” from “houston”?
What low-key bothers me is that Arkansas and Kansas aren’t pronounced the same.
People in the NE, pronounce it…
…Houseton
There’s another instance where he says “it’s R-KAN-SAW by the way” but I can’t find it. Gotta love the “R-Kansas” pronunciation. Hogs don’t like that one bit.
Kansans and Arkansans are though
There is an explanation for that. Named for different people.
LOL…says who? I’ve always said UH and I’ve always written UH. UofH always made me think of derogatory “Cougar High”, which I despise.
Yes, that was the explanation I received from a native New Yorker when I was in, of all places, the Netherlands.
He was taken by my Texas accent !!
I have actually walked on that street.
This must be something new. Many of the LSU decals on cars, T-shirts, and Sweatshirts when I was growing up in Baton Rouge and during the years I went to LSU said “Louisana State University.” Maybe they don’t like having the “University” left off when not using LSU.
Isn’t the Arkansas River also pronounced as ar-kan’-sas?
When you see those words alone “Louisiana Sate” for most people in other regions we think of “Louisiana State Penitentiary”
