Kansas Coach thoughts on NIL and Transfer Portal

So they’re human. They were human before NIL happened so all this handwringing because our players are human seems unnecessary.

You know, I never wring my hand; I just make observations and point out possibilities as I see them.

I’m curious . . . . . I’m curious about those poor athletes that are slaves to the universities and colleges they trade their physical abilities for an education . . . . . i. e. room, board, books, tutors, personalized strength training in a great fitness center, personal development assistance. Just some of what I know about. I really feel sorry for those athletes being treated like indentured servants . . . . .

Exactly. A company wants to promote their product in an area and they determine a college star is the right face for that campaign.
The decision wasn’t rendered to create slush funds.
The NCAA is and was such a waste. A child could have predicted this. The NCAA should have written guidelines the first day this dropped. This is about a person’s image and the use of it by outsiders. Not a division of the school’s financial aid office being run through a local business.

Am I misremembering - or did the slave quarters at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home (along the Potomoc River) look anything like the Guy V Lewis development center?

Or boosters like A&M in particular.

In my day guys chose a school based on entering a different kind of portal.

Exactly, NCAA should’ve made rules from the start and now it’s too late. I think next season we’re going to see a bunch of super teams underachieve, i hope those teams see buying kids is not the answer. I’m glad coach said he’s more concerned about taking care of our own, there’s merit in being loyal to those who were loyal to you.

I do think instead of just complaining to local reporters.

A group of coaches, should hold a press conference.

Imagine Bill Self, Tom Izzo, Sampson, Calipari, Bruce Pearl, all in the same room, basically speaking in unison that the current NIL and Transfer rules are hurting the game.

That would be much more powerful. Will they do it? Probably not.

But, these guys who have been in college basketball for 30 years, cant lobby the NCAA to change its transfer rules?

Main point being that it hurts high school players. Everyone is saying it. Media, Coaches, they all say it. So, if a freshman has to sit 1 year if he transfers, then that might incentive Coaches to continue recruiting more high school players

How much has paying coaches millions per year hurt the game? Many factors brought about NIL and the portal, but coaches getting millions and moving for millions more didn’t exactly set a sterling example.

Now coaches learn to deal with what players have all these years - coaches leaving for money.

Im okay with NIL. Fix the transfer rule. Or lower level High School players will get screwed.

What is the incentive to recruit a 3🌟 high school player who needs to develop?

If a freshman recruit has to stay at least at least 2 years, theres the incentive. A piece to build a team with.

If a freshman can just bounce after 1 season, there’s no purpose of having them on the team. Cause theyre too inexperienced to contribute.

So essentially they just are a practice player for 1 season and they leave like Armbrester for greener pastures. Okay. Now imagine if Ramon and Javier both left too. We’d be like, well maybe we shouldn’t recruit as many freshman

Just go full transfer portal. Well unfortunately alot of coaches are transitioning to that mindset. Recruit the portal, and not as much high school recruiting

Let the coaches getting lots of money figure it out. Portal players, HS recruits, whatever mix works. I’m okay with everyone, including coaches, getting what the market will bear. Ever work a job and something either internal like a reorg or external like regulations made the job harder? Brave New World.
