It depends on if you are talking best talent or best team playing together.
In the phi slama jama era, you had 5 uh team members drafted: Clyde, dream, Micheal, young, Franklin, plus previous year Williams… so 6 total, drafted by nba. Most talent for sure…
But team wise, defense, offense, clutch play, free throws, rebounding, communicating, this is probably the best…
Phi Slamma had the greatest UH group of talented players ever.
2025 #forthecity team has the greatest 3pt and greatest defensive team ever assembled under Sampson. If they win tomorrow, they are the greatest UH team ever.
If you paid attention to their loses. 3 came from just player adjustment. 1 came from an unexpected loss at Home. Sorry I was 4 losses off. Maybe I was a season off as well because next year squad could actually go undefeated based on PG familiarlty. The position that gets coached the hardest.
Just pointing out that most of us thought the team could contend for a title. You got a little carried away with your prediction. All good though. Hopefully the team delivers tomorrow and ends all of our collective suffering.
They lost 4 games. 3 were in November. That’s carried away by assuming they can go undefeated? Did you assume they would go 19-1 in conference play? Undefeated on the road in conference play? Lose one game in 32 or so games? No my friend I was not being carried away. Like I said, I may have been a year off. Since next year could very well be that team to do it. 4 losses from undefeated is not carried away especially out of 39 games.
You said the team would easily go undefeated. I told you that we were playing a very tough schedule this year and to pump the brakes. You said the schedule wouldn’t be that challenging (lol). You mouthed off that you’d get back to me when they were 25-0. I told you not to panic when we were 21-4 because we’d still be in line for a 1 seed and on track to do everything we wanted this season. So again you got carried away in the offseason and quickly proven wrong. Go Coogs!
So by reaching the title game this is by default Sampson’s best team ever. This team is now in discussion as one of the greatest Houston teams ever. At which point you can debate talent vs stats and such
Should all our hopes realize tomorrow, this will be the greatest University of Houston basketball team ever.
I wonder how Rob Gray would’ve done on this team. He is still a favorite, but there are a couple on the same level. This team was built on the foundation Gray, Galen, and a few others built.
Good job your average prediction could be made every year. Coogs lost ONE game in regulation. Took 3 OT losses. That is not being carried away. But thanks for sharing your brain cells about a normal successful Kelvin Sampson season. Could copy and paste your response to every top 5 basketball program. Everybody who listens to coach knows those 3 November losses would be different if Milos didn’t miss with a broken nose and his acclimation wasn’t delayed. But like I said again, I may have been a year too soon. Next year’s team could go undefeated. Just wondering did you have Houston beating Duke? I’m sure you could say it would be a tough game, hopefully they could pull it off right?
This past season’s team experience was the biggest factor in their success. There is no telling how these young kids coming will adjust to Sampson’s coaching and a Big 12 schedule. Especially a Big 12 road schedule.
