Kelvin Sampson Best Team Ever?

You can ask him tonight if you make it to the Woodlands for the ROAD SHOW.

I know we got to the final four with the 2021/2022 team, but I don’t think at the beginning of that season we thought they would be as good as they ended up being.
We lost Quentin, Dejon and Brison and replaced them with Edwards, Taze and Carlton, which on paper is a net loss.
Especially after Marcus and Tramon went down during Christmas, we really pulled some magic out and had the ball bounce our way a few times to make it to the F4

The team with Carlton, Taze and Edwards didn’t make it to the final four (made it to elite 8).

Ah you are correct

CKS talked about all those guys and the question of how do we replace them at the ROAD SHOW. It is next man up with our culture of winning.

ON PAPER yes this looks like Sampson’s best ever team.

Depth everywhere. 4 returning starters. Numerous players with NBA potential.

Last time I heard Sampson brag about our team preseason was 2021-2022. He was talking about how we just absolutely killed Texas in the secret scrimmage. And how experienced and talented the team was

And then we had a great year. But we almost lost to Hofstra game 1
So this is a reminder that the season is long and just enjoy the ride. Because there’ll be ups and downs

This team will win over 36 games. I am having a hard time seeing who can beat them. I mean every body is an draft prospect except maybe one or two players. That is if they do not improve. Houston worst players are starters.

“Who can beat them”?

Have you seen our conference? Iowa St? KU? Baylor? Arizona? Playing on the road in this conference isn’t easy.

It is his best team so far. They won 32 games last year. 4 or 5 more does not seem far fetched.

I think they can win 8 more. Put me down for 40. I dont see how anyone could beat them

You a underestimating how important Shead was. I expect some growing pains from having a new Starting PG in his first year with the program. But a 30 win season is still doable

Everyone has questions this season coming up even UConn. UH has as good of a great shot to win the chip as any other team on paper, viejo!!!

Kansas just lost their 6th man in Kugel and a stud frosh in Philbon. Any team who starts Hunter Dickinson at center ain’t winning the championship!!! Timme was a better offense of player at center, had a unicorn like Chet on the frontcourt and Mark Few as coach and still didn’t come close because his defense was bad!!!

i think the adjsutment period wont be that long or big
shead was vital as he ran the entire offense, but i actually dont think the adjustment from shead will be that steep

especially cause we won games on defense and that will likely be elite from day 1
and the offense will imo only take a few games to adapt

for us defense is a scheme you have to learn, and that takes time
for our offense it s just about adapting and switching to new roles
our offense is fluid and not a set system, we just adapt to new players strengths

ie the elite 8 year
our offense started off as an iso offense, focused around sasser, mark and fabian
when sasser/mark went down its was initially bad for like 1.5 games but we adjusted moved carlton to starter over chaney, moved to an inside out offense with shead running the show
getting carlton the ball in 1on1s or finding the open man on shooters
the adjustment wasnt long becuase we didnt try to teach taze and edwards to become iso scorer, we changed the system not the player to better fit everyone’s strength.

a few games to see what works (and who works best with who) is what im guessing
the learning is in our defense not offense. we dont have a set offensive style like other teams

If I was searching UH’s 2024-25 basketball schedule for losses, I would first look to see if UH has any back-to-back B12 road games.

But then again, it’s not my nature to see where and when UH may lose a game.

@pesik knows ball :sunglasses:

There are going to be mostly close road games in conference and there is a chance they won’t all go our way.

The Alltime Cougar win streak is 33 games. Started with winning the Third-Place Game at 1967 Final Four and ended during the semi-finals of 1968 Final Four.

This Team could beat that. Including The Big 12 Tournament we will play 34 games.

We seem to have a road game at Kansas. And Arizona. Extremely tough places to win a road game.

Do not predict that Sampson can go undefeated. Just that the talent and depth makes it possible.

38 wins? 40 wins? UNDEFEATED?

Assuming those outlooks are sincere

I’m very excited about our chances to do very well in the W/L department, but predicting our Coogs to have one of the winningest seasons of all time in college basketball seems a bit unlikely to me. Technically possible I suppose.

Just thinking that the season is long, surprises happen, the competition is very demanding, etc

I would think 6 losses and an appearance in the final (and I guess the trophy if I’m being honest) would be plenty of a dream season to me.
