Good question!
Yeah, I can remember UH playing in bowl games with interim head coaches.
K-State’s bowing out of a bowl opportunity is REALLY weak sauce.
BYU is going to win the B12 this year…

It does not make any sense from a player’s point of view. For most this would have been their very last football game in their career. You go to a bowl game you get all kinds of gifts that you cherish for the rest of your life. There is something more to this story or K-State is in even more trouble than reported.
I really hope BYU wins Saturday. I’d love for UH to win a Big 12 football title before Tech, which had a 30-year head start!
From the Texas Bowl newsletter, no change…
Kinder’s Texas Bowl Projections
SEC
Missouri (8-4) - The Tigers solidified an eight win season all the while inking head coach Eli Drinkwitz to a contract extension. With one of the best RB duos in America, the Tigers are a strong candidate to return to Houston for the first time in a few years.
Big 12
Houston (9-3) - The Cougars beat Baylor 31-24 for their ninth win and they’d be a GREAT candidate to be the Big 12’s representative in Houston. I’d LOVE to see Willie Fritz’s Cougs in the Texas Bowl.
In the old days a bag full of bowl swag was all it took to get players excited, now with NIL they probably have a 2 week trip to Cancun planned instead.
Here is the Liberty Bowl vs Tennessee Projection… its weird and many of the picks make NO sense, like the Big12 won’t play in the Texas Bowl and will send Arizona to the Pop-tart’s. But this would satisfy a lot of yalls urges to play an orange UT in a stadium full of their fans.
Like that one, great game! We have a chance to beat SEC…
I really don’t believe this is something the players should be deciding. You go to college to learn how to be a professional. There are professionals that run the adminstration and it should be their call (Maybe ultimately it was?) But you’ve asked students, alumni, boosters and fans to support your program all season and when you qualified for post season and your coach burns out and quits you tell all those people “sorry the kids don’t want to play”. They’re being paid and have been are getting an education. They signed up and took the money to play, there’s an obligation to finish. Maybe so many of them said they’re jumping in the portal and they didn’t think they’d be able to field a team? Either way, it’s not good.
sorry
Kyle_Be_Coogin didn’t mean to reply to you.
All good my Coog Brother!
Nah, we had. Shot 2 years ago under Dana and UT had dudes just like they have now. We would be better prepared that is for sure…
Notre Dame used to decline non New Years bowl invitations on principle. More to do with not living up to their own expectations and preparations.
Well, they don’t have a conference obligation to contribute to the community bank account, so that’s kind of a different deal.
When was that? Prior to 1970, Notre Dame wouldn’t play in bowl games at all. Even in the 1970s, Notre Dame would play in non New Years bowl games.
2009 is the only one I found in recent history, and that was after they fired a coach.
Interesting. In 2009, a 6-6 Notre Dame team declined to go to a bowl after the departure of its coach. That story has some 2025 Kansas State vibes.
