Metro now charging for light rail to UH games

Going back to first Mayor Turners administration, if you bought a game ticket and wore red , you could ride the light rail to games for free.

Part of the effort was to encourage people to go to games and to ease the ridiculous traffic during games.

For many fans this has worked for years. Simply park at palm center or downtown and ride the rail to TDECU. No traffic no hustle.

Mayor Whitmire supposedly a fan of UH has revoked this . Not sure if this was communicated to Houston’s AD, would be interested in knowing.

Either way, going back to parking at campus during game day is going to be pain, and Whitmire definitely isn’t getting my vote.

I deep dove this once, it was free 1 year because of a sponsorship in like 2014 or 2016, and fans decided that made it always free.

I’ve ridden maybe a couple of hundred times since inception, been checked once. But they’ve ridden in several rides that I’ve been on. They don’t do a lot of smiling.

They had fare officers asking to pay, even they said it was ridic, I didn’t mind paying but LOL

They do towards the end of the month. I once forgot my card and got cited. I threw it in the trash shortly after

When I lived in Houston and before rails, I got a disabled pass from Metro. It took a letter from my neurologist saying I couldn’t legally drive because of epilepsy. The price back then was $52.00 a year ($1.00/week).

Even at full price, the MetroRail is still very affordable. $1.25 each way. High school and college students, seniors 70 years and older and disabled folks can ride at less than half price (.60). Riding Metro is still way cheaper than paying to park on campus for the games. This is a non-issue. Yeah, it would be really nice if Metro and the city would support UH athletics more but if people are complaining about paying for MetroRail and refusing to go the games because of it, they aren’t really that serious about going.

That is the issue we have… they announced it would be free for the 9/4/2026 game, not permanently free forever.

AI says its free and even cites posts on this site as verification, but if you read any news articles they cites actual dates, no where on the Metro site does it say it is free, UH, Astros or Texans.

Here is the article AI used to reference, but it specifically lists the “final five remaining home games days” of 2016.

Here is an article where Reliant sponsored and got free lightrail for the 2011-13 seasons of the Texan’s
