Check this out; any real substance?
University of Miami Considered for Big 10 Membership | Watch
They’re AAU and a recognizable football brand. So yeah, it’s a possibility.
There’s that big ACC buyout prior to 2030 though.
Miami might be a good fall back in case they can’t convince ND to come on board.
Big looking to make its own 24 team playoff before long.
Miss me on that… college football will be turned off in my house if we end up there…
Well, if the B1G wants to plant a flag in Texas, UH will put out the Welcome Mat.
What did you expect?
This so called bill is a travesty. The bug10 and sec got what they wanted. A cap of 19 teams that is. I mentioned it weeks ago. By agreeing to this it is by de facto the p2 creation. This bs argument of four teams having to be independent for five years is nothing. Furthermore nobody knows what the acc by laws are.
There is only one option for congress to save college football as the country’s game.
Dissolve the ncaa. Replace it with a Federal overview. Give 10 cfp invites/spots to every conference winner and select six at large. You want to make eight at large? Why not. But the entire country should never be subject to two conferences. NEVER.
Big 10 and SEC want to double the NIL required payouts and only allow one transfer (oe another if a coach resigns).
This way they can buy off the best players and lock them in.
The current free for all could lead to another Indiana coming from a different conference.
ND isn’t ever joining a conference. NBC pays them 50 mil a yr plus if they win a national championship, they get 129 mil and don’t have to share it. ND is rich . Investigate how much money they get on incentives, plus ACC money in bb and other sports from their affiliation.
The big 10 simply needs to take Miami etc and move on from the ND possibility
The bug10 has no benefits to Notre Dame, none…and that is what pis…s the bug10 the most. There is absolutely nothing they can do about it.
The American public wants to see ND compete at the highest level and be on TV. They write their own checks. The big unknown right now is that nobody knows what the acc bylaws are made of. What is the limit of acc teams living for making the acc bylaws worthless?
They could be making 90 million per year or more on TV as a full shares B1G member though.
I understand your point about the playoffs, but remember.
They missed out completely last year.
Does it make sense for Illinois and Purdue to be making more on TV than ND?
It can happen if ND doesn’t make the playoffs.
True but if ND is in the top 12 which is doable in most yrs , they make enough to not need the big 10. They likely make the playoffs this yr with an easy schedule of only 3 top 20 teams in smu , byu and Miami.
ND is very resistant to conference affiliation bc they would lose their identity, probably become an also ran or at least not winning the conference in the sec or big10. Right now they make enough money and can schedule easier teams to be top 12.
The ncaa etc would almost have to force them to join a league by taking away their top 12 ranking auto bid thru discriminating against them for not being in a conference.
What does the extra 40 million actually buy? Maybe not being turned into another Nebraska is worth more than 40, especially if you’re trying to teach a bunch of students about virtue and piety and stuff.
I have followed college football since 2002 and Miami has not been relevant since. I am not from the US so basically I had no knowledge of college football before attending UH.
So when I look at Miami all I see is a medium size private school, with poor game attendance , that has never won any titles since I have been following it. When I see a Miami vs average ACC school it doesn’t sound like a game I particularly want to watch.
There was a stretch in the 80s and 90s when Miami was among THE most dominant powers in college football, with natties in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 2001, as well as some “unclaimed” natties and several other national title game appearances during that era (those were the glory days of my youth).
Yeah, they weren’t as dominant from 2002 to 2024, BUT, they just played for a natty last year, so they appear to be back.
And they’re AAU, which is important to the B1G.
You’re right, they don’t have the best home attendance. That could be a factor against them. I’m sure the B1G would much rather have ND, but again, Miami might be a decent “consolation” prize.
also, between 1991 and 2001, the U had quite a few scandals.
My understanding is that Rutgers has lost something like half a billion dollars since joining the Big Ten. The conference may be looking at alternatives if they choose to leave or get asked to leave. These things are typically done in pairs though, so assuming that it’s true, the next question would be who would be Miami’s partner in this. There has been a lot of talk about UNC and Virginia over the last few years.
I would love to see the Hurricanes in the Big 12 but we will see.
What law is conveniently omitting is that Miami won National Championships by doing what other so called blue bloods do. BUY PLAYERS. It did not seat well with the established blue bloods…shortly after Miami was put on a major probation…while at the same time the established blue bloods kept doing what they do best…BUY PLAYERS.
Buying and paying players while 100% illegal has been known for decades. The ncaa look one way for other schools that have done it by giving them (us, smu and others) the death penalty.
At the same time the ncaa looks the other way like it never happened. uta, atm, bama, michigan, osu and others are very thankful to the ncaa.
Only SMU has ever been given the death penalty for football and only ULL for basketball.
True.
We got hit with a hard probation, but not death.
Amazingly, Penn State avoided it.
“Compete at the highest level” I have a coworker who is a big Notre Dame fan and he feels their schedule is hot garbage.
