My Terrible Opinions on Our Big Men

Maybe we’ll get our doors blown off by them again in Kansas next year

We haven’t had a reliable big man scoring since Gorham. And he wasn’t really a scorer until his senior year. 8 pts a game on 18 minutes. Roberts is the closest thing. Its a product of the 3 and the fact that our bigs miss out on a lot of long rebounds.
It’s our system. Winningest system in the country the last few years. Last year after Miami a group on here wanted to trade Mark and Sharp for our own Nigel Pack.
The “Du Jours.”

Deceptive math (I do not believe you intended to be this way) as these percentages between players are based on the number of shots each took.I’m not a math guy but I think if you took all the shots taken by each and established a mean you could then take the number of made shots by each and have a better or more representative percentage.

I’ll remember that in case I need to reach a really high shelf.

Maybe we stomp them @ Kansas

You mean except for Fabian, Carlton, Jwan, and Jarace right? I think people misremember Gorham. His career high was 15 points and he only averaged 8.4 points his last year. He was a hell of a rebounder but he generated almost no offense outside of putbacks.

putbacks and dunks are high percentage shots.

And threes. He was hitting those corner threes.

The same ones that Fabian was hitting but at lesser frequency.

Dedan Thomas would be the closest match but he is not the defender Shead is

He was making half a three a game. It’s nice that he had the ability but it was a pretty minor aspect of our offense that year. Again I was responding to Funk’s comment saying we haven’t had reliable big man scoring since Gorham. But if we’re saying Gorham was a reliable scoring threat (career high of 15 pts) then that’s not true because Fabian, Carlton, Jarace, and even Jwan were bigger scoring threats. All of those guys put up multiple twenty point games and had at least some ability to generate their own offense. Gotham’s scoring pretty much entirely came off offensive rebounds (which while valuable can hardly be considered reliable).

Our best big men scoring season came in 2022 when we had both Fabian and Carlton in double digits (one of only two times weve had two front court players in double digits under Sampson). In fact those were actually the 2nd and 3rd highest scoring averages we’ve had by a front court player under Sampson and they happened to come in the same year. Last year would a probably be the 2nd best as we had both Jarace and Roberts in double digits.

I am not sure what you mean. The numbers and % are from the official season’s stats from the UH website.

Understood.

FRancis will be the best center in college basketball next year. End of story. Most of you do not know seem to know much about basketball.

The best!?

I’m a homer too, but that is a bit of a reach.

Now, if you said best defensive or best shot blocking or best rim running or something like that…. Maybe…. But some of these college centers are good two way players.

Why, defensively there is no better already. I saw flashes of brilliance on offense. - I think with work this summer he will improve dramatically on offense. The game will slow down for him even more and if you played any, you know what that means.

I like the kid from Indiana State…”cream Abdul Jabbar”, Robbie Avila.

Though not highly athletic has a high basketball IQ. Our guys are faster and stronger than him but he’s head and shoulders better offensively.

Our guys are of course much better defensively.

the defense would take a hit but he would add so much to our offense that it would be a net positive

only issue is not sure if we would get into a massive bidding war for him

It might be overly optimistic to say the best center in basketball. That seemingly right now would require a quantum leap in offensive improvement. Not impossible, but unlikely. I think he can improve quite a bit, but an elite two way guy is asking a lot.

I actually think Lath fully developed could be that guy because he is such raw clay and young to work with, that when all is said and done he could be that force.

We really don’t need Francis to be an offensive juggernaut. Just keep playing incredible defense and score on lobs and put backs. His biggest weakness right now is fouling too much. If he can stay on the floor longer, his defense will far outweigh any perceived negative offense. I see him as a Chris Harris type. Lock down the lane and be an opportunist for scoring.
