One data point does not make a trend. A lot of people have overreacted to the results of the games in the 12 team format from last year with some of those non-competitive games. I’m not against continuous improvement of the format, but maybe we should wait and see a couple more years before trying to expand or change qualifiers.
…and the fact that ASU got robbed.
This sec/big10 run cfp format is a
to every single college football fan…but wait there is more do you actually think it was a coincidence the sec got 14 teams in March Madness?
We all know where this is heading…two mega conferences and everybody else can get lost.
Yormark should never accept this neither should the acc. If either the BIG12 or acc blank first this will be it.
The acc can’t afford to accept this format. If they do all acc teams will want to leave the acc immediately.
Here is the real reason for this sec/big10 four teams CFP each format.
MEDIA rights
They are coming up in a couple of years. espn is forcing the issue and no longer wants to pay for four major conferences. They want two mega conferences. This is obvious and crystal clear now.
I have a novel idea that would probably get me escorted out of the CFP Expansion meeting. The winner of the ACC, B1G, B12, SEC, and top rated G2 get one automatic bid. The rest of the bids are based on the AP poll standings. Let the invitations be based on performance on the field, not how good your conference is at political maneuvering.
I am in favor of 14, or even 16 teams, in the playoffs. More teams mean more nationwide interest, which means more eyeballs watching, which means higher advertising rates.
Good in theory, but the problem is there is bias in the polls. Especially before the season starts.
Sick of hearing mega conferences, it will never happen. SEC has NO interest in going past 16. BIG members are unhappy at 18 and think the league is too big, already. They each get 4 bids and Big 12 get 2 auto bids plus a 3rd team most years from the open category. ACC can do same as us. The important thing is have the playoff at 16 teams. BIG has never earned the right to have 4 bids, but they have huge number of eyeballs who watch their games. It is what it is…
Most definitely, especially before the season starts which contaminates the entire poll for the rest of the season.
Should do away with all except week 8 CFP release. But you know… marketing
Should leave 2 spots
So we should hope our 3rd best is better than the 5th team from the sec or big10
Of 16
4 sec
4 big
2 big12
2 Acc
1 ND
1 g5
So 2 at large after this
Box scores, OOC records & SOS, head to head, conference vs conference records and objectivity should count more than subjective reputations and impunity, at least in my opinion.
I do not think the G5 bid is automatic. That G5 champ will need a great record and a high ranking to qualify. So it could be 2, or sometimes 3. I DO like Big 12’s chances of qualifying 3 teams most years.
Why should the sec and bi10 get four auto bids? Why? Because espn says so? At this rate what will happen? That is reality Monte. Yormark should never accept it. How do you know what the future holds? I am pointing out what the sec and big10 want. Having four automatic bids goes against what the cfp is all about. You ear n it on the field not in the media or by media pundits that tell everyone “THIS TEAM IS NOT WORTHY” Ask why they want four automatic bids and why we should obey to them?
One of the biggest reason I have read, heard is that the sec and big10 will form their own cfp/championship. What kind of a reason is this? We accept and then a couple of years down the road we read “THE sec and big10 WANT SIX AUTO BIDS” or they will walk.
That is exactly why I posted this.
I think it’s fair. Again the big dogs of the big12 and pac merged into the sec and big10 so they need more spots and at least 3 . Big took Oregon, usc ,ucla and Washington and the sec took UT and OU. Worst case those adds would normally take 2 spots with Oregon and OU etc taking spots as champs from big12 and pac. Oregon and OU used to be traditional good.
I think we are lucky and in a great spot to get 2 auto bids and a chance at a 3rd with an at large spot. If they go the merit route then espn and polls can subjectivity screw us and only allow 1 big12 like last yr. The sec will get 3 or more in a free for all merit system.
Again recognize a good deal and take it. If we deny this deal , I promise you we will get 1 at best each yr while the big and sec still get 3 or 4 under a so called merit system. It’s not fair but it’s reality.
I’d be grateful for 2 auto bids and a chance for a 3rd
BIG has won the last two titles and had two of the four teams in the final four last year. They also had two teams in the CFP in 2022. So not sure what you mean. I think the BIG will be just fine. The SEC is the one that needs to be worried; if it becomes an arms race between alumni bases, then the majority of SEC schools won’t be able to compete.
I think ND can get the G5 bid if they have a higher ranking. Which would leave 3 at large.
Notre Dame isnt eligible for the G6 bid
Notre Dame will have to prove they don’t belong to be left out. They’ll be fine.
IF a conference agrees to put in writing they are second class, then they should just be kicked out of the sport.
If the SEC and B1G are so good, then they would get the 2 additional at-large each without requiring a guaranteed extra bid. No need to auto give it to them.
Then why is the sec and big10 threatening?
I respect your opinion TOP25 but this is where I am not following.
“Recognize a good deal and take it”
“Grateful for two auto bids”
What are you writing is that we are not worthy for more. But. How do we know this if our cfp participants is limited at two? Remember how ASU was robbed? There is no telling how far they would have progressed.
It is all subjective. These schools are in for their conferences and names. Look at UT, yes University of Tennessee. They got clobbered by osu. Did UT deserve to be in there? That is why the so called p4 should all get the same number of cfp entries. Two each then the at large can begin.
Ideally all FBS Div I conference ought to have a representative. Otherwise they might as well drop football. Why play and spend $100’s of M’s?
At this rate the BIG12 and acc will be like a G5. This is where it is going.
Now I calculated the 2024 cfp using the following system:
1 point for win
1 point for by
Results:
big 10 - 7 points for four cfp entries
sec - 3 points for three cfp entries
BIG12 - 1 point for one cfp entry
acc - 0 point for two cfp entries
Ind - 3 points for one cfp entry
G5 - 1 point for one cfp entry
At best all power conferences should get two entries.
Georgia got beat after getting a bye. All pundits claimed they would destroy Notre Dame…What happened pundits?
uta was helped by the ref. Never should ASU have lost with impartial referees.
Tennessee got destroyed.
The only conference that can ask for more than two is the big10 because both osu and penentiary pedophile state performed.
At this rate should they be more than one independent? Notre Dame proved it.
Earn it on the field then the cfp. There is no way to tell how the BIG12 would have performed with more than one representative.
The sec wants, wants because they threaten more than once to break up. Ironic when many write that the p2 will never form their own cfp. Then why are they threatening?
I disagree with the whole idea of guaranteeing playoff spots to teams outside of conference champions. If that idea is so brilliant, why doesn’t the NCAA use it in basketball? Let the best teams, using an objective process, make the playoffs. As long as the criteria is known before the season, teams can adjust their schedule accordingly.
No power conference should be guaranteed more than two teams.
In FBS DIV1 you win the MAC and you are not in the cfp unless you are undefeated or close to it.
For March Madness yes you are in.
