New Med School sneak peek

I haven’t seen the faces of any of my doctors for over a year or more. In fact, I acquired a new doctor a year ago and thought that he had a moustache until I saw him without a mask a couple of months ago. I said, “What happened to the moustache?” and he said, “What moustache? I’ve never had one.”

I’m not, just saw the photo on Facebook and found it easier to format including the photo instead of the whole post!

Med School now officially “moved in.”

For the record, I wasn’t trying to knock the new Football Ops project. Good stuff is expensive. I’m sure the Med School will get fitted out, spend more money over decades. UH has much of which to be proud. The new Med School will serve the community, help our neighbors.

Too, all those students are so much smarter than I am. Good thing!

Some of you guys don’t like the building. I like it.

My only question is whether it’s big enough, or whether we’re good with expanding at some point?

But I think it looks great.

If you look at the master plan there are several other buildings on the property. Maybe just conceptual but it suggests they at least plan on expanding in the future

It just doesn’t look as aesthetic as the first renderings. Probably is still a nice building inside. In the renderings they also planned for expansion for other fields and the amount of land they have there is enough for a whole other village.

Big things start small. Just like a Medical School was just a dream, and some folks thought it was just a pipe dream. It’s reality now. that piece of land will be utilized quite effectively in the future, I’m sure

The massive window on the front look like, since they couldn’t decide between a round window or a square window, they just included both in the structure.

If you try real hard you can see a cougars face in that design. :sunglasses:

It looks good to me. We at least have a med school which is huge for UH.

Wow, creative, but how did they get that through the door?

I hear we are having a little trouble hiring med school faculty.

Any reasons you can expand upon here?

Is it because they haven’t received the second phase of accreditation or money related

If I had to guess, it’s probably difficult to compete with McGovern, Baylor, and Methodist. UH doesn’t really have ties to a strong hospital system for the doctors to work at. They made some ties with local HCA hospitals, but a) those hospitals make for terrible residencies, and b) they’re for-profit hospitals that aren’t very appealing to work for as faculty.

Well the UH Medical School is a member of the Texas Medical Center just like the other medical schools so I assume there will be some sharing of information.

TMC membership is nice for research, but it won’t really do much for clinical faculty. For context, BCM has ties to Texas Children’s, St. Lukes, Ben Taub, and the VA. UTH has ties to LBJ, Memorial Hermann, and to some extent MD Anderson. All the good teaching hospitals are already taken unfortunately.

UH med school is placing emphasis on developing General Practitioners. Aren’t the teaching hospitals for specialists?
