New polls are out

that’s not a good arguement, alot of games come down to just a few plays.
good teams find a way to win them

No one is saying that.

I AM SAYING …

I’ve watched EVERY Houston game this year. I’ve watched EVERY Tennessee game this year.

Tennessee, IMO, is very deserving of their ranking.

poll inertia and recency bias working against us :wilted_flower:

Agreed.

Beat TCU and we’ll be ranked again.

Win out and we’ll be ranked 15-20.

An “at large” bid to the CFP is possible, but not probable.

The Coogs BEST opportunity of making the CFP is by getting to, and Winning, the CCG.

Should we beat TCU and Baylor, I like UH’s chances…

Should we win the rest of our games, and either make the playoffs or win our bowl game, we’ll finish in the Top 20 and with double-digit wins.

Considering where we were last year, and where I thought we would be this year (I was just hoping for 6 wins and a bid to the whogivestwotoots.com bowl), that’s AMAZING improvement. Hell, we were too bad last year on offense and lost too much on defense for me to imagine any more improvement than that. I figured we’d win a few more games, given that our schedule was easier, but I NEVER imagined we’d be 8-2 at this point with the possibility of 10 wins or more.

Should we finish the way I described in my first paragraph…I will be tempted to proclaim Willie Fritz as a program miracle worker!

ESPN has a lot of influence on the voters. They own the SEC and ACC contracts and their bias shows in the polls every year.

While I don’t disagree, the Coogs winning has an even greater influence on the voters, IMO…

Look we shat the bed losing at home to WVU, there is simply no way to sugar coat it and all the copium in the world won’t change that. We just got to finish strong and hopefully get into a really good bowl game, maybe the Alamo Bowl or the Holiday Bowl.

Most likely… I agree.

That doesn’t change the fact that paths still exist for the CFP, and it’s not entirely inappropriate to discuss them in this forum.

Or is it?

Well, God is not specifically a Houston Cougar, so we don’t have any secure hope in anything in this devilish world of college football. It’s true that the door is open a crack, at least for two more weeks, so it’s interesting to speculate, but if you talk like it’s going to happen until it doesn’t, you’re asking for disappointment. Don’t borrow trouble.

There’s a marked difference between having hope and optimism, and “expecting” it.

I’ve been clear it is not my “expectation”, but I, and others, continue to hope for it, and discussing the scenarios by which it can happen don’t justify being shut down by the folks at the other end of the spectrum, who, oh by the way, for the most part, are not mutually exclusive from the bunch who have said…

…in the middle of game threads…

…the Coogs will finish the season 7-5.
…UH hasn’t played anyone with a pulse.
…we run the ball too much.
…we pass the ball too much.
…CW is terrible.
…Fire Willie.
…Willieball Doesn’t win games against good opponents.
…etc…

So, excuse me for not always agreeing with this group of folks. The pessimists.

Should it be a surprise that optimists and pessimists don’t always agree?

I mean, all else being equal, IMO, optimists make better fans.

I’m with you on that.

Those posts to that effect were stupid.

Sure, but you asked if it was entirely inappropriate. I wanted gently to say that it isn’t entirely inappropriate, but maybe partially…

I know full well that past performance is not an indicator of future success, and that games in the past don’t influence the outcome of games in the future. That being said, so far there is no instance of UH making the playoffs, and many of the reasons are structural and have been outside our control (see @uhlaw97 and @92010Coogs discussion in the other thread for the bulk of the reason). Until it does happen, there’s no evidence to say it can happen, so I think it’s appropriate to be reasonable, even while maintaining some hope for the possible. That’s not the same as assuming we will lose all remaining games or that the coach needs to get fired or any of the rest. I never said any of those things. I’m no pessimist. But it isn’t a binary between optimism and pessimism around here, and I think you’ll get along with people better if you stop jumping on them that way.

It was binary to some of those other posters though who were posting stuff precisely to that effect.

I actually like Your take. Right down the middle IMO.

Totally agree.

Agreed. And to be clear, I wasn’t talking about You.

Have you ever considered the fans here have more invested than the creation of a CoogFans account?

They have degrees, attend games (home and away), and buy and wear Coog gear at work and around town etc.

It’s called passion, not a passing fancy.

If You are talking to me, my answer is…

I don’t have to “consider it”, more than that, I am fully aware of it.

I have a degree too, and watch games, and buy gear, etc…

Are you saying You and others are passionate, and it’s nothing more than a “passing fancy” to me?

Did you use these words to imply your opinion is more valid?

I think You just have a bone to pick, because you stray away from the topic instinctively to try and invalidate anything and everything I say.

Have I hurt your feelings somehow? If so, I apologize.

Maybe one of these days, you’ll find we are on the same side… Coog Fans.
