New Softball HC- Chrissy Schoonmaker

This is an awful hire, there were so many better options in our backyard. From James Landreneau at McNeese who’s led them to 4 Southland titles and 4 conference tournament titles with a small budget, to Rick Fremin at Southeast Louisiana who’s had 40+ win seasons the last 5 years and just defeated LSU TWICE in the NCAA tournament.

Between the allegations against Schoonmaker to whiffing on the options available, I can’t see how this moves the needle forward.

They offered the job to UT’s top assistant, Steve Singleton, but he turned them down. Not enough money. Yikes.

Schoonmaker is a very eh hire.

I mean, yeah, that’s kinda our calling card…not enough $$$

Oh no… Oh no UH no… There were much better options out there.

How much did they offer him?

That I don’t know

Maybe he was just holding out for a better job or didn’t want to come to Houston.

Panic hire from AD with transfer portal closing in less than a week. Should have locked up a coach two weeks ago. Looks like a UH isn’t serious about softball. Ceiling in Mediocracy. Mcneese, ULM, and SELA coach were way better options. They will be scooped up by more committed programs in the upcoming years. UH whiffed on this one.

Clearly

I think that in our already cash strapped situation, given that we now have to come up with an additional $ 20 million plus to fund pay for play, NO non-revenue sport is going to get too much attention.

It’s like baseball. We all want Whitting fired, but as a non-revenue sport, it won’t get the attention we want.

Nunez is looking like he’s in over his head.

Unless he can buy some pitchers.

You might be right but I think lack of money is at the forefront. I truly believe Whitting would have been gone if we had enough change sitting around.
Unless we fill up the piggy bank soon I’m worried about our baseball hire next year.

So would he have cost more than the other coaches mentioned (McNeese, SELA,etc.)?Very underwhelming hire from what I’ve looked at. Not the kind of news I want to read on the first day of vacation.

Very underwhelming hire indeed. Let’s hope we’re wrong.

Vesely was making 130 and hes making 160 at Texas. Not that she deserved a penny more, but we’ve got to start paying our HC more than others’ assistants.

Why we gotta hire someone from UT anyway? He must know the magic code to winning which is spend money to make money?

He was focusing on the CWS so we spent all this time waiting on him to get shafted?

Any clue as to what the other coaches make (McNeese, SELA)? I assume it would take at least $300k for the UT coach if not more. Probably could wait another year at UT and get a big time HC position that would probably at least double his current $160k salary. Then again, the UT assistants are more than likely going to get nice salary bumps this offseason.

I hope we didn’t pass up on other interested well qualified coaches because we thought we had the UT guy in the bag. I wonder if he held off on committing to UH in hopes that UT would win the title and he could ask for a bunch more. Or maybe he committed but increased his asking price after they won it.
