New Softball HC- Chrissy Schoonmaker

You know, I always made fun of Mack for spending money on a feasibility study or hiring a search committee for all his hires and projects, but I guess it solves the debate we’re having now.

She’s basically a .500 coach in a one bid league. This makes no sense. Wildly disappointed.

I pray they didn’t blow search firm money for her - and that paper city guy is 100% positive :joy: he’ll turn a blind eye to anything not positive won’t even touch baseball :joy:

I don’t dislike the hire as much as others. Could we have made a bigger splash? Of course. I see this as a bridge hire in order to get rid of an immediate problem. Let’s face it, all B12 teams are playing for second place now behind tt. We are so behind the eight ball talent and recruiting wise that it will take at best a few years to become respectable, no matter who we hired, especially with our limited softball nil budget. Hopefully we will at least become competitive with any effort at all to recruit locally. Going to be a tough go, the last coach was persona non grata locally.

Bridge hire to what? She will be the third manager in program history. It seems to me that there aren’t bridge hires in softball at UH.

U sound like a disgruntled parent? Am I right? My daughter played D-1 softball and I’ve heard this story before

When are people going to care about students athletes. When are we going to care about mental, physical and emotional abuse does it only matter when a picture makes headlines saying a college athlete took their life. It’s not the grind it’s not the hard work it’s not even the academics it’s the horrible leadership. The athletic directors need to dig more this coach had been reported for years and her we still hire them. Remember that young adults often don’t tell their family everything they are in a place where they are trying to handle life lessons as an adult. When they do speak up it’s often brushed under the rug.

I originally thought they were trying to capture the mid-teens Cougar magic AGAIN with this hire. Let’s face it, the 2011-2019 run of Cougar Softball was great. When Hoyas was done, Ves came on. When Ves came on, they hired a coach who was an assistant during an NCAA run here.

I didn’t see anyone excited about this hire when they could have thrown the bag at others in the region who had proven results, especially to mid-majors/FCS level teams that would come and beat the Coogs in their own backyard.

It was fun watching them in undergrad, 2019 had pitchers throwing no hitters on their PITCHING DEBUTS. Still fun to watch in grad school, maybe went to one game this year, but a carryover of Ves culture is not fun to see.

Oh you’re a player wow I’m sorry you’re going thru this, I’m sure you have spoken to AD? Don’t know who u are, not that it matters to me, but hate to see you leave UH, at least address ur concerns with the AD or even Dr Renu K

Not a good look calling out teammates by name on a public message board. May want to clean-up your post, especially if you’re looking to transfer.

No one is excited about this coach she brought a horrible culture and she is fixated on talking to commentators to paint her picture she makes sure she gets the loving caring compassionate coach displayed in front of cameras it’s all a facade.

So you’re transferring? What schools are you looking at?

I’m excited about her, give her another year. I’m willing to wait, anything is better than what happened to the program after Kyla left

Really? Just curious why you feel that way.

The team finished 3-21 in conference for dead last place, four full games behind the next team and 18 games out of first place in a 24 game schedule. They won 4 conference games in 2025. Have they shown improvement not reflected in the wins count? Has recruiting improved for 2027?

This hire by Nunez was met with meh by most posters here in the know who reasoned that there were better coaching candidates out there. This hire seems like a big dud so far. It’s a real shame that this once proud program has been allowed to rot for so long.

Sounds comparable to the baseball team, and look how long that guy has been there. Look how long the last softball coach was allowed to stay and create the rot in the first place. Look at the women’s basketball team, finishing 1-17 in conference, no one is calling for that guy’s head after 1 season. Many people are excited about Mitchell’s hire. What was Willie’s record after his first year? What was Kelvin’s record after his first year?

I don’t have any backstory information on Schoonmaker; I just know the apathy created about the softball team under the last coach. She deserves a chance to build her own team after such a dismal chapter in UH softball.

Okay, fair enough. I can’t say I share your excitement about the hire but let’s hope it works out.
