I don’t think it was really planned, but at least we know there aren’t more extensions being handed out right now, so we may be in better shape with nobody in that seat for now.
It takes schools a pretty long while to hire a new AD. Most I have observed took at least a couple months. I don’t mind them taking time to make sure they get the right person.
The firing was planned. Firings at this level are not happenstance.
They didn’t do this without consulting with attorneys and the board. They probably let Kelvin and Willie know the day before the what, why, and their plan, so they wouldn’t freak out and UH risk losing one of them.
I’m certain they already had a list of UH’s needs and the qualities of a new AD (and a preliminary list of potential candidates).
Once it was announced about Pez, UH went ramped everything up. It would be unlikely that the persons they want most are unemployed, so they have proceed with caution.
Just curious when UH alums have ever been noted for giving back to the U? Since most of their kids go to other schools my guess is that they buy tickets there. Not in all cases, but would contend most.
That’s a valid point. But, other than Texas A&M, Rice, Sam Houston, etc, most would not be traveling to other schools for athletic games regularly.
My wife and I were both UH alumni. Our daughter wanted to go to Noth Texas University for a specific degree. After graduation, NTU was never where our money went.
That was just us though.
I think if we look at it now, we missed the big window to develop a generational pipeline from those grads in the 80s and 90s.
Millennials like me are not having huge birthrates of 3+ kids as the boomers and that will bite us in the next 10 years as more boomers are not going to be able to attend more football games in the 2030s.
$100k hopefully is well spent
I still can’t believe they didn’t already have someone in mind before making that decision. Wow.
Any contract with an executive search firm would have needed to be formally approved after Pez was let go, otherwise the contract could have been subject to a FOIA request. Imagine if Pez found out while he was AD.
I’m curious to see if the search firm has any surprise names. A few of the logical candidates, e.g., Dickey, etc. have been mentioned on this site. We usually use the term “Boom” for recruiting, but in this case, we need a “Boom” when all is said and done.
We need an ‘outside the box’ hire, like BY or JL with the Astros.
Not the time to bring in a basic cookie cutter type of hire.
I hope they talk to Reid Ryan and other people outside of the NCAA circle
Or they did and it didn’t work out so now we are searching without a plan.
Or he was getting ready to offer extensions and we had to stop him at the pass.
He probably was in the middle of printing the softball coach’s 4 year extension. Maybe it was the only pdf template he had?
New AD could be announced soon!
AD info in first question answer. Explains a few things about speed of search.
During the July 9 “Let’s Rage Coogs” show --presented by the Saxenian Family – from Big 12 Football Media Day, Joseph Duarte gave an update on the AD search:
The last two sentences of that Q&A are interesting.
Good info from Duarte. My opinion : someone who has AD experience and can manage coaches, budgets etc and he needs to have an associate ad who does nothing but raise money. That guy needs to be a Jim Crane kind of guy who solicits every company in town.
I’m liking these team up/cross-over episodes, they really add to the viewer experience since everyone has different sources & bits of info…makes it fun putting the puzzle together.
This isn’t quite the same as a coaching search. Minimal impact on recruiting, etc. I think it is okay if it takes awhile as long as we find the right fit.
