New UH Athletic Director, the search goes on

I feel the new AD needs to be a CEO. He or she has two divisions. Finance (NIL and fundraising) and operations (personnel management and infrastructure.) With the advent of NIL, that in itself is almost a full time job.

[Cougarfred] You nailed it !

If you look at the Athletic Administration currently, that is essentially how it is structured.

Monty Porter is the Deputy AD, Chief Operating Officer
Garrett Klassey is the Deputy AD, Chief Revenue Officer
Most likely, NIL is coordinated through Cougar Pride

It would not surprise me if the new AD restructures the entire Athletic Department and some people are asked to move on. It is unfortunate, but you cannot reasonably expect much better results using the same people. What you lose in institutional knowledge, you gain in fresh new ideas and new energy.

Or just open up the position and see the large scale national interest it has. Much rather do this than going behind Pez’s back and orchestrating a deal that would exclude so many candidates.

Klassy is the new AD at Fresno St. And is known to be NIL savvy

Renu needs to hoof it and find him.

Tom Herman was not a UT grad, he went to Cal Lutheran where he played wide receiver.

I even called him “Classy Garrett Klassy” when he left. My bad. He is still listed in the Athletic Department Directory, but Pez is not. Typical UH. I wonder if UH Athletics knows if he is even gone? I guess that is one less person they need to prepare a pink slip for.

He went to grad school at UT.

The Rockets threatened to leave town. Northwestern Mutual (my company) provided the money to develop Greenway Plaza. They bought the team to keep them in town. Ray Patterson worked for the Bucks (Northwestern Mutual is a Milwaukee company) and they hired him to run the club and make them viable. Jack Marin was a legit NBA player but wasn’t the Big E. He was cheaper and the Rockets were rebuilding.

Ray solidified the franchise and Northwestern Mutual was able to sell it to an owner who promised to keep the team in Houston.

I’d go with the Texans guy

I’m not sold on bringing in someone with no college ad experience. Not everyone can be brett yormark, nor do I think we should have a bunch of Brett yormarks. Plus he’s a UT grad. I would go with a proven AD with a track record of fundraising and marketing. Nunoz is interesting. Dickey of course is still a strong candidate. Fletcher could probably be had at a discount.

They haven’t even started interviews yet? What the ? Very surprising to me.

Don’t know how much the AD has to do with marketing and game day atmosphere, but with a new coach and new video board the ideas should be popping as to how to maximize game day fan experience. This needs to happen soon.

TBH, I don’t think we have a ton of institutional knowledge to begin with, due to turnover in the ticket office, Cougar Pride, etc.

Outside the box thinking
maybe we should reach out to this guy. I think he is available.

Edwards is not available. Beginning April 15, 2024, Edwards is serving a 5 year show-cause penalty for ASU recruiting violations.
