That’s already happening - but we’ve caved in and made it a player’s game
For $500k they better deliver a final 4 at worst as that’s an odd investment as how do you get a major ROI when there’s no signage when they are on TV?

$500K - What? Schools like UT & ATM have been paying players more than that going back decades.
USC bought Reggie Bush a house…and in very expensive Southern California!
We are talking about FOOTBALL though, not basketball.
One and done was/is almost unknown in football.
NIL made college football a world of semi-professional free agents.
And only a small number of schools with both a) enough resources, and b) enough alumni and fans with said resources that give enough of a fukk about college football to fund the NIL honeypot will be able to survive and thrive in that environment.
College football has indeed been “ruined” by NIL in that regard.
I worry about UH in that respect. Not sure we have enough rich fans such that we’ll be able to fund the NIL honeypot sufficiently.
I mean, I keep hearing you say how UH is going to be a big NIL school.
Why?
That’s certainly not the case currently, based on what I’ve read.
Not sure how accurate this is, but the reality seems to be….that we are at or near the BOTTOM of the P5 in NIL.
Houston does have a lot of businesses, but many are run by Whorns, Gaggies, and others, and even among those run by Coogs, relatively few will be run by Coogs that give enough of a crap about UH sports.
It’s akin to Stanford or Georgia Tech. They’re in a wealthy area with wealthy alumni but apparently the community and stakeholders don’t have much interest in funding NIL.
In fact, lots of schools in that list are in wealthy cities with wealthy alumni.
So you prefer the BCS system where two schools, or a handful of contenders, were “paid for” to be in the championship game before the season even started?
Oh…and payments were STILL going to players just under the table!
The REST of college football were pawns
I far prefer the playoff + NIL era where more schools have a chance to win ON THE FIELD
I think the portal "free agency ’ has done more damage. If there were restrictions on transfers it might also curb NIL poaching. It is shameful the Bama player transfers gets his unrestricted NIL money and transfers out again.
I don’t think that’s true.
I think that NIL for the most part simply means that the rich get richer, and more poorly resourced programs will become even less able to compete.
So no.
I do NOT consider that to be an improvement.
Quite the opposite actually.
I hope that you are right about UH one day being a big NIL school.
But we aren’t seeing it thus far.
Law wants Rome, built yesterday
Not intended to. See what is already happening? BIG and SEC trying to break away and form their own thing.
It was inevitable, once ESPN/FOX started throwing the money around like they have been. In fact, because ESPN overspent on college sports is the reason you are seeing this push for consolidation. This is what happens in all industries. Remember how many computer manufacturers there used to be 25 years ago? Now look. Same for cell phone makers, automakers, etc. Industries and industry participants come and go.
Also, who says we even need college athletics? I mean, college sports was an accident of history, brought about by club sports where rich dudes tried to “prove their athletic mettle”. Modern college athletics was started by Teddy Roosevelt, who demanded that colleges get together and regulate the sports to protect player health and safety, or else he would propose a government organization to do it. If the government had done it, we would not be in this mess. It was the refusal of the government to get involved, and the growth of college athletic industrial complex, combined with the good old American value of “winner takes all” that created the perverse incentive structure you see now.
For this to change, Congress needs to get involved. It needs to stop worrying about regulating athletes and start regulating the schools and conferences. If it doesn’t, then this will continue.
I concur. Tie government funding, from research grants to student financial aid, to school expenditures and their return based on education and investment. Similar to the for profit university financial aid reform.
Consolidation happens, it just happening to something a lot of people care about. Auto industry who cares? 2 maybe 3 lot easier to handle than 4 or 5. Rest assured the rich are going to get richer B1G/SEC at the cost of those who are not them
Do you honestly believe that FOX & ESPN want to continue paying the Vanderbilts’ or Rutgers’ of the world 90 Million dollars a piece
After the ACC disbands, this train definitely isn’t stopping
I’d prefer a BCS 16-32 team playoff system with auto bids for all conferences and two guaranteed bids for each P4.
With NO NIL.
What???
NIL has nothing to do with the "Actual Program’s resources ".
They can’t be directly involved other than being a middle man.
NIL is about two buckets
Luckily, for us, UH has the potential to be one of the Kings of the post NIL world.
That was NOT true before…we were handcuffed
UH has to be a competitor first.
The Exxon-Shead deal doesn’t happen unless UH is elite.
Football has to compete at the highest level before companies partner with us, otherwise, it will just go to UT/A&M
UT/A&M can get NIL opportunities for their brands alone
I hear you talking about all this NIL “potential” we have, but I’m not seeing it.
Everything I’ve seen points to us being near the bottom of NIL.
NIL seems to benefit the UTs and aTms of the world, that is to say, the schools with huge numbers of fans that both have money and will rabidly spend it to benefit football.
We are NOT one of those schools.
That’s why I said, NIL ruined college football by favoring schools like those, the very type of school that we are not. Worst possible circumstance for UH.
I have been following several UH fan groups and I am not shocked how many UH fans are talking about having Aggie kids who make this game hard on them.
I can’t imagine how many former Coogs have gone on to be CEOs and could give a flip about UH.
The NIL has not been good to UH and I can’t foresee it getting any better.
I agree…we must win at a high level to get support even remotely close to the big shots!
How many Texas A&M NIL commercials have you seen in Houston?
Ive seen a BUNCH for UH. Both Football and Basketball
Doesn’t matter how many ads you’ve seen.
aTm is considered a top NIL school.
We are not.
