I stand corrected. It was Hosea Taylor.
By the by our 1979 DT’s were Hosea and Leonard Mitchell.
Might have been the greatest pair in Cougar history. Some think it was Lee Canalito and Wilson Whitley. I say Taylor and Mitchell.

Tuscon Sam, I will give you the first choice, and be very happy with #2.
Indeed! Yeoman had Taylor and Mitchell in 1979, with David Hodge at LB.
Am fairly certain that was our greatest trio at those positions.
They actually got payback on us last weekend…
Fritz beat them when he wasn’t “supposed to” 2 years ago in Houston.
Tuscon Sam, Wilson Whitley and Lee Canalito played with Mack Mitchell, 6’8" DE, who was drafted in the first round (5th overall) in 1975 by the Cleveland Browns.
Again, I will give you the first choice and be happy with the results.
Aldine, that victory is listed there.
As for the win against MSU, we were not ranked.
JLCoog is right.
Yeoman recruited unreal defensive talent.
His 1976 Championship Team defeated UT in Austin 30-0 and held The Longhorns to minus 24 yards or so Rushing.
50 years later believe that remains the all time lowest rushing total for UT Football.
The total rushing yards from that game (11/06/76) were +24 yards, not -24 yards
The Sooners held them to -7 yards in their game on 10/07/2000 to set the record for the lowest total ever
That was a lame stat to keep bringing up like it mattered.
I was there. I was convinced my life was in danger after the game walking through the campus to find the car we arrived in. We couldn’t physically defend ourselves from the objects thrown at us, as we were trying to leave… Greatly outnumbered by those classless thugs.
The UH vs UT game in Austin, TX in 1978 was, at the time, the largest football crowd in the history of the State of Texas. UT PA Announcer Cactus Prior announced it during the game, and it was all over the newspapers the next day. That game was a nail-biter and took a few years off my life, but man, it was worth every second.
I remember late in the game Texas had a long punt return called back on a penalty, and the Whorn fans sitting around us were really wailing, because they knew their offense wasnt going to get another touchdown on our defense. That was a nail biting game to watch, for sure. Great Houston win.
Hosea Taylor blocked that last second field goal!
Yeah, our 66 team was 8-2 and had beaten Florida State, Miss St., Okie State, Kentucky and Utah, and our 69 team won 10 straight games and beat Auburn 36-7 in the Bluebonnet Bowl and still couldnt get ranked in top 10…We didnt get a lot of respect from the polls until we joined the SWC in 76.
IMHO- we still didn’t get a lot of respect AFTER we joined the SWC- and still don’t
Hosea Taylor
Yep after Moon Mullins took over that ‘69 bunch and won nine straight games we were most definitely a top 10 team. Mullins ran the veer offense better than anyone IMO and had he not messed up his knee in that silly alum spring game no telling how good we could have been the next two years
Yes, I think he would be an excellent offensive coordinator for Willie.
