Off The Fritz Bandwagon

Just stop already. You’re really trying to break down Sampson’s early postseason record as some kind of comparison to a football program that can’t even score TDs?

Football was undefeated in conference play and obviously lost in the championship in 2021, so I misspoke. But they did tie for 1st place, and my point was that we had a pretty successful year and followed with a winning season and bowl game in 2022.

2010 in basketball was a lucky run through the tournament to close out a losing conference record, and that coach got fired for the one who really killed the program. If that’s what you want to point at as a comparable success…OK, I guess. But sure, that season four years and two coaches before Sampson is the same as football’s winning records in 2021 and 2022.

Not trying to call out anyone for not going to those terrible basketball games - those were dark years that are still fresh in my mind. I’m just pointing out that our basketball attendance (even if you count tickets sold) was around 40% of capacity, and trying to compare it to football last year at least points to misremembering things. Football was at around 90% capacity (announced) in 2023. Even if you go back to 2022, football was still over 60% capacity. No comparison.

I did expect better performances, even though the record isn’t a surprise. It’s obviously too early to start talking about firing the head coach, but like you, next year is a different story.

I kind of hate the TCU game for giving me false hope.

It’s ranked 3rd in the big 12 on composite.

Yup the football program can’t score TDs and in Sampsons first year they couldn’t even beat low majors. Back to back losses against Alcorn St and South Carolina St. Most of yall don’t even remember that. We started that year 0-8 in conference. We ended up 4-14 but only notched 1 conference win against a top-200 team. Fritz is miles ahead of that **** show.

The biggest issue is our scoring offense :

-kicker (can’t hit 45+)
-oline (improving but can’t dominate the trenches)
-QB play (ZC can’t throw and DS throws too many INTs)
-predictable play calling

We lost the Kansas game because of the turnovers
Moved the ball decently until the second half
-if we had scored in the end of the 2nd and in the 3rd quarter, we could have made it close.
When our offense doesn’t score, the pressure gets reduced for the opposing offense (KU). Our defense has done best this season when the score is close and there is pressure for our opponents to score.
Games our defense have struggled the most are when we’re not able to keep up offensively (aka cincy and Kansas) and there is a 3 TD lead for our opponents.

As long as we can keep scoring and continue to add pressure on the opposing offense, our defense will play better.

It’s simple, if we can’t score, we won’t win. We scored against rice and tcu and we won. Turned the ball over too much against KU and lost. Against Utah and Kstate, we’ll need to score consistently (at least 30 points) to win.

It really is embarrassing how people keep trying to compare our current situation to Sampson. It’s almost disrespectful to the magic that Sampson has done here.

I remember going to games in 2014. My wife and I would have an entire section to ourselves.

You are reading too much into it

Where is Parker Jenkins???

I’ve wondered the same thing. From our best RB to one that rarely sees the field. Very strange. I’ve got a hunch he’s gone.

These seem to be in the drinking water since the lack of creativity and adjustments at halftime were two of the major problems with Dana.

It’s just kind of nonsensical.

There are lots of factors, but the big commonality between the two situations was the need to upgrade personnel through recruiting. Fritz has Year 1 advantages over Sampson in every way imaginable.
Transfer portal
Facilities (practice, game, weights)
Conference schedule
Budget
Support (students, fans, donors)

You can even look at the population growth over the last 10 years in Houston (and Texas) and see that there are more prospective athletes nearby.

Football has different inherent challenges than basketball, with transfers and a tough conference possibly making it more challenging to get over the hump, but Fritz’s starting point is like a leadoff double compared to Sampson’s starting at the plate and down two strikes with two outs. I’m sure he would even acknowledge that - he probably wouldn’t have come here if our 2023 football program looked like our 2013 basketball program.

Fritz has turned things around before, so the expectation is that next year looks several magnitudes better than this year.

How is it disrespectful to Sampson? He’d be the first person to defend Fritz. This board as always is on one.

The other RB’s have played better.

Dude was playing in rat infested Hofheinz. With maybe 200 people coming to the games. His entire team left and he had no portal to backfill. Couldn’t even walk recruits to any facilities. Just kept them in his office and showed them pictures.

But, yeah. Fritz is down just as bad. Give me a freaking break.

We exaggerate that story more and more each time it gets told. smh

I’ll keep your spot on the bandwagon for you. No thanks necessary lol

The descriptions of what Sampson’s first year was like bear zero resemblance to football except that players left. Sampson probably lost more starters than Fritz did, honestly.

What’s exaggerated?

I went to every single game that first year. My wife and I had an entire section to ourselves sometimes.

Rats were all over Hofheinz. Just read the article.

Sampson has said himself he took recruits to his office and just showed pictures.

Danuel House and TaShawn Thomas both left the team.

What exactly was exaggerated?

Meanwhile, Fritz has a $150m ops center being built. An ziPF. A newish football stadium. The portal. He’s making a hell of a lot more than Sampson was. What was exaggerated?

The 200 fans part. The other guy saying Sampson lost more starters. Y’all are drumming it up a bit. Lol

And no one’s said that Fritz doesn’t have better resources than what Sampson has. The point I made is that relative to his competition (i.e the B12) we still lag behind. And resources isn’t limited to facilities, it’s also fan support. We’re currently last in attendance in the B12 and 2nd to last in all of the P4. That’s a similarity.

Ofc there’s differences too. Like the fact that the competition level Fritz is facing is much higher and the fact that it’s harder to turn over a football roster compared to a basketball roster. Nevertheless there are still plenty of similarities between the two situations.

Goosebumps.

Just go read the article. Kellen said it himself. There weren’t more than 500 fans in the building. Jarred Vanderbilt had an entire section to himself. Just go read what Coogman posted. It’s all laid out for you.

Fritz is not anywhere remotely close to the position Sampson was thrown into.

Sampson lost 60% of his starting lineup.

What was new to me. Sampson had to go practice at the rec a few times. Just an embarrassment.
