In the end, no one can ignore me, I guess.
Bottom line.
Until now, UH has never hired a new baseball HC with prior experience as a HC on an NCAA tourney team. The only time we have ever hired a baseball coach with any prior HC experience, it was Bragg Stockton, who coached a TCU team which, at the time, was at or near the bottom of the SWC every year he was the HC. Never made the tourney as a HC prior to coming here.
So based purely on his NCAA tourney level HC experience, Davis is actually, on paper, the best credentialed hire we have made as a baseball HC.
So much for the idea that this hire is “horrible.”
Whether he will be any good here remains to be seen.
We will evaluate in two years.

That was the most imaginative and cooky rationalization for Davis yet. It made me respect him less and feel horribly about the hire.

Some really good discussion and insights about Will Davis from Brad and Duarte on Talk Around Towns last night.
Note: Audio starts out hard to hear because Duarte is outside at the CS regional. He moves inside after a couple of minutes and then you can hear him much better.

The thing is that Sampson and Fritz are anomalies
Usually young guys that get P4 head-coaching gigs that aren’t the blue blood programs will jump ship after 1 or 2 good seasons to go coach at a blue blood (or any school with far more resources because it’s less stressful)
I understand that.
But that doesn’t invalidate my point.
It’ll be dang near impossible for anyone to come in and show significant improvement in year one.
Gotta give 'em two years.
Sampson and Fritz’ teams didn’t show improvement in year one; in fact, they arguably showed regression from the previous season. Of course, it was unreasonable for anyone to expect them to show significant improvement that first season.
But in year two…WOW!!!
Let’s hope that this guy can both turn things around NLT year two…AND…to address your concern…STAY BEYOND THAT POINT!!!
