Total is now 82 1/2. Getting tempted.
āOne of the challenges is what elements from their previous tenure as a head coach (the Cougars will continue),ā OU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said Tuesday. āWhat you donāt want to imply is you know exactly what you will see here in a couple of Sundays. You go down a bad path when you do that.
āCertainly you have to lean on the video that you can find to kind of suggest maybe what you are going to see. Itās appropriate as you prepare your guys to not say that weāre playing West Virginia this Sunday.ā
Houston quarterback DāEriq King is coming off a junior campaign in which he led the nation with 27.5 points responsible per game despite missing two games with injury. He accounted for 50 touchdowns, an American Athletic Conference record.
āWe have a lot of respect for him and how they are going to use him, itās going to be wait-and-see,ā Grinch said. āTo pretend like weāre going to know exactly is naĆÆve on our part. Lean on the film and make sure weāre playing with an effort to fix the plays that we donāt have a chance to rep in practice.ā

Outlook: Hurts led Alabama to a 26-2 mark, including a national championship win in 2017. His ability to adjust to the offensive system will help determine whether the Sooners can continue their torrid pace under Riley.
The defense is bound to get better under Grinch, who worked wonders at Washington State. He inherits a roster loaded with experienced players eager to put last seasonās struggles behind them.

What should be the biggest change between last year and this year?
Cultureā is one of the most overused words in the sports lexicon, but itās a term that carries some significance in light of what Oklahoma has experienced on the defensive side of the ball in recent years.
Sure, much of what weāve heard from Alex Grinch and his players throughout the offseason could be huffing and puffing, but it seems to resemble a bit of what we saw when (somewhat ironically) the Stoops Bros. and the rest of the ā99 staff came into Norman and gave the returning personnel a rude awakening.
So a substandard defense (just like Houston) last year miraculously becomes a championship caliber team with a new DC? But Houston D is still a question mark? P5 vs G5 garbage again! We must beat OU to end this double standard analysis!
Neither has DāEriq King. Heās in your head Jalen.
Unpopular opinion: has anyone kicked around the idea that we might have better coaches than OU? I havent looked at their staff, but are our coaches comparable output-wise? Iām not going to look at talent or salary, because weāve seen lesser coaches and players beat the Coogs (i.e.Tulane, Tulsa, and Army). Iām sure the media is talking them up and OU is doing all they can on their end, but what ifā¦just what if, our coaches have our guys MORE prepared?
Iām pumped! Go Coogs!
Thatās a real possibility.
Plus, the element of surprise. Only the seniors where here (and there) when we played them last. They donāt have a good read on our players (since many were hurt) or the plays we are schemingā¦Our coaches probably know more about OU than OU knows about UH!
Well, thatās not good. Iām sure we at least have better athletes than Arkansas State but schematically, Hurts shredded Cauthenās defense.
Outside of the Championship game against Clemson, Hurts shredded everyone in the limited time he saw the field last year. He was 51-68 for 765 yards, 8 TDs and 2 picks.
Hurts is going to run all over us, but that doesnāt mean UofH canāt beat OU. The spread has moved to 24.5 points, and the O/U is 80+
Well DUUUHH!!! ⦠both Mordecai and Tanner are greenhorns QBs RS soph and freshman ā¦
Riley states it was the closest competition-wise in many moons ⦠either he is blowing smoke or Jalen may wind up disappointing right out of the gate ā¦
Mordecai was a 4 star QB but is a pure pocket QB ⦠no mobility ⦠very little is given about Tanner out of Az ⦠he may be the surprise but he is a freshman ā¦
I remember Florida State saying that before the Peach Bowl of Dalvin Cook!
Pardon me while I talk the Coogs up a bit.
clears throat
Jalen has performed very well coming off of the bench in blowouts last year. However, his longest pass was 54 yards against powerhouse ULL and Arky State. Other than that, he hovered around 21 yard long completions per game on passing attempts. Even last season in limited action and over the course of his career heās been sporadic as a passer. Iād imagine that has little to do with that was Bamaās offensive line or their WRās; so I wonder what gives?
Meanwhile, King has gotten a game long completion of 50 yards or more 7 times last year. A 79 yard bomb against tech and his lowest game-long completions of 16 and 20 yards came against Tulane and TSU; those two games King had completion percentages of .73 and .80.

Jalen rushed for a career long of 60 (once) and King had career longs of 61 and 64 yards. As a starter Hurts rushed for a game long of 30 or more, seven times; King had 7 as well. We have the more explosive QB anyway you look at it. Some will say there is a differential in talent of the competition those two played against but that brings me to my next point.
Itās not about who you play, itās about who you beat when itās your time to put up or shut up. I remeber not many giving us a chance in a similar opener; people were running with the notion that OU had the better QB, and so many weapons, until Matt Adams hit their leader and NRG erupted. I had a feeling we could win that game, but after that hit I knew it!

Who will be the LB that puts the hit on Jalen? Well it doesnāt matter because these guys will be ready and Hurts better look out!
Hail Red, Hail White!
