Helton called the Run and Shoot the “Chuck and Duck.” He and Dimel were the two worst coaches I’ve seen head UH program. I’ll even give Dimel a little credit for trying to rebuild a program that had hit rock bottom. But Helton, barf.
I blame AD Bill Carr for Helton. Helton had no Texas ties and no head coaching experience. There was no reason for him to even be a candidate, other than his friendship with Carr. Helton was gruff, and managed to alienate Texas high school coaches.
Dimel was at least likeable, and I thought he recruited better than Helton, although the W/L record does not bear that out. I know when Dimel was here, one of his objectives was to repair the relationship with high school coaches that Helton sank to the ground.
My son was at Strake Jesuit when I brought him on campus for a FB event. He played linebacker at the time and was curious about college ball. After the event we ran into Helton heading for the parking lot . I said hello to Coach and introduced my son and I. Might have been a bad time to talk to him but he was border line rude and did not offer any encouragement in this very short conversation. I was not impressed with his “coaching demeanor” nor as a representative of my University . My son was totally disappointed.
Did he end up playing college ball?
Thank you for your question. No he did not. I cannot blame it all Helton. My son said he decided to study Engineering and would not have time that football requires . Take it for what it is worth . Yes, he graduated in Engineering and went on to have a great career.
What? A real student who put academics before sports? Good for him, you raised him right.
Thank you Red. It was the Good Lord and Strake Jesuit . I was only a facilitator .
Go Coogs…Eat Em’ Up !
Chase Daniel was also turned away by UT initially and when they finally showed interest after he went to back to back state championships, he stuck with Mizzou
Helton was crude to say the least as was Sumlin. Briles was easy to talk to but I’m not sure about Herman who always seemed to be running toward the spotlights.
I liked Applewhite but he always seemed very quiet to me. Not a man of many words the times I was around him.
Yeoman and Pardee were my all time favorites and Jenkins was fun to be around, just not a great head coach imo
Jugular John may not have been a good head coach, but he was a hell of a OC.
Frankly, I don’t give two S***s about who the cows have or didn’t have at QB
They had colt McCoy at qb.
Then why click on the thread?
Cuz I hate the cows more than any other college team.
Of course he was but he lost me when he pulled that cheap shot on Illinois. At the end of the game we fake kneeling to run the clock out and then throwing a touchdown pass. Classless
10-1 while being playing with a limited roster due to these ut located at Austin probation was one if not the best HC job in our history. What would Mr. Jenkins could have been able to accomplish without these probation and a full squad?
Our 1989 Baylor game is on YouTube.
You can see Jugular interact with Andre Ware and send in the plays.
You also can see Jim Eddy coaching up our defense on the sidelines. Eddy is not in the booth. He is on the field. You can see him talking with Jack Pardee during the game.
There were many Seniors or Junior redshirts on the field. Thus they were 1986 recruits. Including Ware. They were Yeoman recruits. His last class was actually one of his best.
I see a lot of similarities between Helton and Holgorsen
I’m not sure what your point is?
Routinely in the NFL, QB’s are drafted too high or too low
Hiring people, in general, is a crapshoot and even more so when the person is running an offense
Texas seems to be just fine with what they have. If we had half the value of what that program or A&M’s was worth, we would be estatic.
Go to surlyhorns or orangebloods then.
