McMurphy — Gonzaga leaving West Coast Conference to join Pac-12, source told
Pac-12 still needs minimum of two football members by 2026, but Gonzaga, even w/out a football team, will receive a full conference revenue share in Pac-12, source said.
Highly unusual for a reporter the stature of McMurphy to report a story that Gonzaga would be added to the PAC and get full shares. I’d like to know more about what led McMurphy to report that story.
I don’t see how this makes sense. The WCC isn’t great, but seems like joining the Mountain West would have been a better move than joining a Pac-12 that is further away from being a power conference than the Mountain West.
What? The Pac has poached SDSU, Boise, USU, and CSU. Those schools account for 12 of the MWC last 16 tournament bids. 6 of the 8 schools in this new Pac lineup were ranked in the top 50 of the NET last year. By contrast the B10 had 5 of its 14 teams in the top 50 and the BE had 5 of its 11 teams in the top 50. It’s a pretty stout lineup. Certainly when compared with the MWC leftovers.
Clearly I have not done my homework. Didn’t realize the PAC had raided the Mountain West, which also doesn’t make sense to me. Why would a bunch of MWC teams leave to form what is essentially the MWC?
To play under the Pac name which has some value and to get away from some of the bottom feeders in the MWC would be my guess. I do think they thought that they would be able to pull some of the best schools from the American which didn’t end up happening. It’s kind of similar to what happened with the BE/American and CUSA last round of realignment.
