NIL won’t change until the blue bloods are getting beat at their own game.
I’m not saying to use the SMU approach like in the 1980s but we need the Oregon, Boise State, Arizona State type of schools to humble the blue bloods in football.
Or in basketball, have a non-blue blood step up and win a few titles like Florida, UConn, Villanova etc.
Gotta look at the long term effects it has on society - when this generation gets hit with rules that affect them they sue and the courts have gotten softer
These same guys may rent your house one day and just bail claiming their interests have changed and didn’t sign a contract based on their mood at the time and sue
You really think he was able to negotiate that he receive the full amount of his buyout if he resign mid-season?
Right, and it’s not like Miami was taking these gritty overlooked HS kids and developing them into young men the right way.
Miami was built off big name transfers lured by the promise of South Beach sunshine and showcasing their skillset for their careers in a low-structure player friendly environment.
That’s not to say it’s the wrong strategy for Miami either, you gotta sell what u have and do what’s best for you, by all means. But this isn’t exactly an old school program like Bo Ryan Wisconsin we’re supposed to feel bad for here. It’s freaking MIAMI for goodness sake!
I mean that’s how they became good in football in the 80s and 90s.
They found an edge of beating all the other state schools to their local recruits.
That is to say, Larranaga builds teams out of me-first mercenaries, who turned out to be me-first mercenaries.
Color me shocked!
Next you’re going to tell me you’re worried that college kids might think fame, money, girls, and fast cars are cool.
He really stunk the last year and a half. Maybe mailed it in?
Sampson isn’t far behind might finish his contract out might not we will see
Far behind what and why is that relevant to this convo?
I was omplying a compromise with the word negotiated. It made sense for both sides to do so.
Kelvin aint leaving early, imo. Last season is 2027 i believe
Im sure his last few yrs, will be to build an NIL pipeline for the program. To leave to Kellen. And obviously win a National Championship

With NIL becoming such an issue, will all of these sports remain viable without the two cash cows ? ? ? ? ? American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Bowling, Cross Country, Fencing, Field Hockey, Freestyle Skiing, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Rowing, Skiing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball, Water Polo, Wrestling. I know we don’t participate in all of these sports, but each sport required funds, and for the most part, as I understand it, those funds come primarily from FB and BB.
99.9999% of those mentioned lose money. In fact, only a handful of men’s basketball programs actually finish the year in the black themselves.
Football alone subsidizes everything in a given athletic department, generally speaking. Hence why Yormark has done such a great job, to secure what he could that was better than most people expected, and looks to creatively and aggressively maximize value in other ways going foward.
It’s a tall task and cause for some anxiety, given how the networks and powers-that-be consistently give the Big 12 the also-ran afterthought treatment. Welcome to the Family LOL
Retiring! That’s what the whole conversation is about lol, he doesn’t have long left, maybe till 2027 we will see
The old Big 12 office pre-Yormark was a bunch of suit coat good ol boy country club insiders, that was content to play nice with the other conferences who they viewed as their friends and colleagues. They rubber stamped whatever Texas wanted to do, which amounted to a fart in the wind trying to appease the insatiable ego that I’m sure you guys are familiar with, called Texas.
These are the MAIN factors why Houston and BYU, along with others, were snubbed and the Big 12 stood pat while the SEC, Big 10, and ESPN sharpened their knives to stab the naive and stale Bowlsby regime in the back with his pants down. The Iowa States of the world were never opposed to the eventual G5 teams joining, in principle. Quite the opposite.
But ISU and the teams outside Texas never had that much pull, to put it mildly. It all stemmed from Texas. They lied and deceived and managed to convince some others to think they were their bedfellows. Ultimately, they thought it was in their best interest to vote the way Texas wanted. Period. No need to start getting radical and thinking beyond that.
All the while Texas was secretly setting their double-cross trap. That’s what really happened. Defintely Oklahoma’s fault too, but also Tech and OSU to a lesser extent because they thought they were a package deal with UT and OU. Yup, dumb. Baylor and TCU were always just going to toe the Texas party line. Not really their fault, but not exactly a heroic stand either. USC w/ UCLA as accomplice used the same playbook UT did w/ their OU lapdog, but swap out ESPN for Fox.
Bowlsby’s last act out the door before Yormark and Co took over was to finally do what he should have done a decade ago, which is to grab as much potential future market share and brand growth potential as possible and invite the 3 AAC teams and BYU in. Then, Yormark took it a step further, stole the Pac12’s lunch they left sitting out on the table, and he made a deal with BOTH networks, something Bowlsby types viewed as poor etiquette and dishonest.
Thanks to Yormark and guys like, yes Jamie Pollard, The Big 12 has enough to pay the bills, FOR NOW, and much like a tech start-up or disrupter, we grabbed as much market share as we could and took some hits here or there to the short term bottom line in order to play the long game. We killed our direct competitors and now we’re attempting to wage guerrilla attritional war on the Big Two, though the wins will be small and it will take time. Basketball is key. Nobody else thinks it is, so it’s a natural place to start.
We showed the networks that we would be good business partners when needed, but we weren’t going to be pushed around or have the wool pulled over our eyes like before. Basketball is key moving foward, as well as time slots (hence all the night games on Fox and ESPN and to go wherever there is a need to fill inventory) and non-traditional thinking in general.
What’s the plan after that?
His son Kellen will take over so hopefully continuity and more of the same winning baby!
