That while some may see a $200MM investment in a hospital in the Third Ward as evidence that the local municipal and county governments do, in fact, invest in the neighborhood, the fact that they let it sit empty for over a decade could just as easily be taken as evidence to the contrary, and maybe Harris County doesn’t deserve a ton of credit for playing catch-up years later, especially when that investment is a fraction of what they’re spending on renovations to Ben Taub or LBJ Hospital.
Even if you might disagree, which is fair, I don’t think it’s super objectionable to see things that way.
My apologies, I should have ask you to clarify your comments before my post so please allow the current national climate as grace. I try my best NOT to not engage in the controversial and I come to CoogFans for an escape and community and to hear what I interpreted as a dismissal or a waste was a trigger so I apologize again.
Yes the hospital/plot/land has been ignored for years. I remember visiting the hospital for my ailing grandmother, family/friends that were detoxing. and neighborhood sandlot football.
However this investment (however compared fractionally) could and sounds like an opportunity for the Fertitta Medical School to be involved thus is a plus for UH which we all desire and want for UH.
Again apologies for my offense
I went to the Cincy game. It was an early game and we had a good walk through the campus to the Fertitta Center. With that, I was startled.
The campus looked GREAT! Very impressive.
Was your walk from the blue lot through the nice new outdoor space to Fertitta? Looks like a great smallish music venue “on the hill.”
I don’t see how an ink blot test relates to a building renovation. Maybe you need to explain that one.
As I took the renovation(ink blot) as a suggestion of waste or dismission.
The new.Centennial Hall 1,000 beds facility is starting to take shape off Cullen. Once completed in 2027 the Towers are set to be taken down and rebuilt into more modern dorms.
The on campus capacity will be over 10,000 and that doesn’t include all the off really on campus students’ housing
After the new Dining hall is completed, I believe they will tear down the Moody dining hall and build the new dorm in that area but keep the towers in place for a while.
The master plan shows the new dining hall inside the upper left blue area. The new dorm is layed out in the shape of an E and Moody dining is gone while the towers are still there.
I don’t know what trees have red leaves, but it would be cool looking for the campus transformation.
Red myrtles are my guess
Those are red maples. I have a red oak, it does not get that red.
The two long walkways in front of admin and in front of arch are impressive. Very much a traditional campus feel, plus the Grove on game days will show it off. I guess we are 10 months from grand opening.
All the new dorms look the same.
That actually looks really nice. Hope it ends up looking like that once it’s done.
Red maples. I have a Drummond Red Maple I planted in my front yard. It never gets that red. Not in Houston.
That pic is wishful thinking.
I appreciate the progress. I will miss the Towers as that was home for 2 plus years. South towers 14th floor 94 thru fall 96
The way I understood it was the Towers are staying but being renovated.
Hey @Ron1102 where did you get the masterplan. The ones that I have found does not show the E shaped dorm or the red colored building near your circle.
Thanks.
Whatever replaces the towers, I hope it’s something with a similar form. Ugly as they are, they’re one of the most prominent features of the UH campus, right up there with the architecture building.
