And we thought we had it bad during our stadium construction project… wonder why they aren’t playing in The Woodlands?
Long ways from Huntsville.
Does TSU still have their home games there?
Yup, a fair ride for students but a good portion of their alumni are here I’m guessing.
The Woodlands Stadium gets used on Friday and Saturday for HS games, doesn’t it?
I believe TSU still plays there so they might have to coordinate schedules. Don’t they both also play once a year at NRG?
We went down this road in two sports. Not fun but choices are limited
They might end up with better crowds this year.
When Sam Houston became FBS, they asked students to help fund expanding Bowers Stadium, which seats less than the required 15K, but the students turned it down. I guess they have found some needed funds to improve the stadium.
I remember reading the way they were going to meet the seating requirements for FBS was by having one home game a year at NRG untill Bowers was expanded.
Maybe it will become Tinsley’s Chicken 'n Rolls Stadium and the Boss Bird will fly over to drop ping pong balls (makes me free old remembering those days).
neither team plays in NRG anymore plus CUSA has that crazy schedule so SHSU has more games on weekdays
If you’ve never visited the stadium, it can feel like a vortex of hot wind. It was poorly designed.
its better now with the fans
That grass field will be torn up between SHSU, TSU, Dynamo and Dash this fall.
Yeah, they weren’t happy about us playing two games there, that stadium is gonna be unplayable in November
SHSU & TXST have an agreement to play at NRG annually. Sam used to play SFA in this game but once they moved up to FBS then TXST replaced SFA in that series
I think the longest I have seen was a few years ago when UMass played at the Patriots Stadium 100 miles away
I thought the requirement for FBS was 30k. When did it change ?
Its been 15k for as long as I can remember
I did a search and found at least 28 G5 FBS schools that don’t currently play in a 30,000 seat stadium.
American: 1
C-USA: 7
Independent: 1
MAC: 8
MWC: 5
Sun Belt: 6
I may be wrong but when we moved to Roberston full time I seem to remember that was why it was expanded.
I’d always heard 15K is the minimum attendance and to achieve that, you need a 15K seat stadium. The 5 smallest stadiums in FBS are:
Kennesaw St: 10,200
Sam Houston: 14,000
Charlotte: 15,314
Hawaii: 16,909
UMass: 17,000
Note: They showed Northwestern (Big Ten) at 15K, but when you look at their site, they are playing at a temporary location. They are building a new stadium that will seat 35,000.
It was never 30K.
Hell, Central Michigan’s 32K seat stadium is the largest in the MAC.
Didn’t the students at SHSU vote to not expand their current stadium?
