OT: Texans and Rodeo May Want New Stadium

MLS is barely a major league? Clearly you are uninformed.

MLS draws more fans than the NBA and NHL, and ranks behind MLB and NFL; this is despite the fact that on average MLS stadiums are smaller than MLB stadiums.

Here are some other data points:

Look at the attendance for Atlanta United FC, the team owned by Arthur Blank (who also owns the Falcons). They average 46K fans a game in 2024!! I have been to a few games and it is an experience like no other. The Dynamo wish the could have that sort of experience.

Now that is a real take down.

The “BIG FOUR” (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL) all run CIRCLES around the MLS when it comes to TV RATINGS though.

The Super Bowl draws over 100 million viewers. The MLB World Series averages 15.8 million viewers. The NBA Finals averaged 11.8 million viewers. The last Stanley Cup finals averaged 8.8 million viewers.

The last MLS finals

only 480K viewers.

Sorry, but the MLS is simply NOT a major league in terms of popularity when compared to the Big Four.

Not even close.

Hell, the college football national title game had 26.1 million viewers.

American football, pro and college, is many times more popular than soccer in this country.

Keep telling that to yourself. We heard you.

Yet some apparently aren’t listening.

I’m not trying to jump in but we are talking about the actual stadiums, with this logic the rodeo is a second or third tier event due to TV ratings. Again don’t care one way or another just saying.

Many more people follow sports on TV than in person.

That’s why TV ratings are the best measure of sport/league popularity.

Consider this also.

The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL all represent the highest level of professional competition in the world in their respective sports (football, basketball, baseball, and hockey).

The MLS, by contrast, would barely qualify as a Top Ten soccer league globally.

The MLS wouldn’t even draw more fans than the European leagues with 1/10 the population size.

We’re all paying for the Astrodome and NRG. I had to rent a truck for work. I ended up paying for the stadiums. They said only tourists will pay, like car rentals and hotel stays. I’ve stayed at local hotels several times too.

the aeros had to sell i think 9 or 10k season tickets to get am nhl franchise. We could only sell about 7500.

at one point someone was proposing to build a stadium for the oilers off red bluff near armond bayou

Perfectly fine. You do what is best for you. I’m sure someone on the waiting list will be happy to have season tickets though.

How much is the average NBA ticket compared to the average MLS ticket? I’m genuinely curious. Because even with these attendance figures, I can almost guarantee that the popularity between the NBA and MLS in this country favors the NBA. By far.

Just let them leave. If they are not interested in the Houston market then good riddance. Have not watched an nfl game in years.

I didn’t realize TV’s watch games. I guess we learn something new everyday.

Doesn’t mean anything.

MLS averaged 24K per game.

The USA’s three leading outdoor sports; NFL, MLB, and P4 college football, beat that.

NFL and P4 college football beat that by a wide margin.

and your point is?
My point is that the nfl owners take tax payers hostage while reaping the benefits of multi $B’s media and advertising contracts.
Good for them to get these contracts. I am all for it. What I am against is for tax payers to fund these stadiums.
The Texans, Harris County honchos, HLSR they all knew about the roof but what did they do?
They signed off on the stadium design. To spend tens of $M’s on a roof that was basically never happened is the equivalent to fraud. It would not be fraud if tax payers money was not used. Do you understand the difference?
A stadium, any stadium, any structure goes through an extensive list of approvals including local officials.
Would you want to buy a house knowing the roof has issues?
Come on.
