OT: Texas A&M's 12th Man Donations Down

For now I don’t see them proactively trying to get into Texas either bc they are good as now , especially with the playoff drama . They simply don’t have to so I don’t see them going after us ,smu , tcu or tech but I’m still sure UT and A&M are off the table for good. So they prob skip Texas unless they become desperate so your right in that regard of skipping Texas.

I’m happy with the big12

They’ve never complained.

A&M and Texas are the only two schools in Texas with significant fan bases in every major city in Texas. Baylor, SMU, Texas Tech, TCU and Houston have nowhere near the statewide fan base as A&M and Texas.

And on top of that, none of them are AAU, which is an unwritten, but well-known B1G pre-requisite.

AAU + big, value additive brand = B1G interest.

The lack of both = B1G non-interest.

Because theres much more money to be made with residential housing for now occupants rather than trying to cater an area to college students while also sharing whatever revenue remains with the residents that have historically lived there.

That being said, in the scenario that Third Ward transforms into a wealthy neighborhood (disregarding the ethics of this for now), it will naturally come with potential districts that serve as a social scene around the campus.

TSU will be interesting because it historically served to benefit African American kids within the area. Of course they expanded outward and have evolved in terms of their admissions, but it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with TSU in the long run.

You’re basing your arguments on current media deals.

I think the next SEC deal will be neck and neck if not more than the B1G’s next media deal now that the SEC has Texas and OU. Keep in mind, when the SEC added Texas & OU, it didn’t increase the revenue structure. They were merely added as full members. Now that they’re in the conference before negotiations, you betcha that they will call for money money from ESPN.

To further counter your argument, both Oregon and Washington are national brands with elite academics and yet only received partial shares from the B1G.

Other than Notre Dame, I agree there aren’t any brands itself worth adding (disgregarding AAU status for now).

However, if the B1G wants to expand for other reasons, such as breaking into a rivals’ territory to get more exposure in said area, it would make sense to add a school for that reason. Which is why (albeit unlikely) I felt it would make sense to add an UH or Texas Tech (given UT or A&M would never leave the SEC). Naturally, adding UH or Tech in the B1G would elevate the brand in the long run.

If B1G really wanted a school in their conference, I’m pretty sure they would aid in getting said school AAU membership. The reason that B1G won’t invite FSU or Miami is because the travel is a major inconvenience despite those brands being nationwide. A Texas school would be the “meet in the middle” choice (again, if it’s in the B1G’s interest to grab that southern fan base exposure)

Looking at his chart, there are a huge number of B12 bars just below the cutoff.

Be interesting to see who sneaks in if it was raised to 75%.

They’ve never needed to break into that territory in order to be the #1 money conference.

Doesn’t seem likely that they’ll need to in the future, given that.

And if they did, they’d be better off trying to poach UT or aTm.

No other TX schools give them AAU, add value, AND allow them to break into the SEC’s turf.

Hell, if invading SEC turf were the only consideration…GaTech, as an AAU school, would be a better fit. Even then, I don’t see it happening. Brand size not sufficient.

The problem is what percentage of Cougar grads have kids or grandkids who attended UH?
I would love to see the stats

Again, you’re basing your assumption on current contracts. The B1G makes the most money now, but that could change come next round of media deal negotiations.

But even if B1G edges out SEC, that doesn’t mean there’s no reason to not want more. It’s capitalism, and if there’s money to be made, then the conferences will go after it.

UT or A&M won’t leave the SEC. UT could’ve joined the B1G if they wanted to yet they chose SEC.

That being said, perhaps Georgia Tech would be another possible candidate for a B1G invitation if they goal was to get exposure in the south, but I think Texas would be much more strategic due to its overall population. Georgia doesn’t have a single city that has over a million people. Texas has 3, and Austin is inching closer to a million.

Only UT and aTm would give them an AAU member and a big brand.

UH is out of the running on both counts.

Still though, not seeing how the B1G has a need to invade the SEC’s territory. They became the #1 money conference without needing to do such a thing, and there’s little reason to believe they’ll need to do such a thing in the future.

Not seeing the SEC surpass the B1G in valuation.

I refuse to believe that our fanbase is smaller than SMU.

I don’t know if smaller is the right word

SMU has a better brand nationally just because they get so many students from across the country (50% of their students are from out of state)

What are we talking about here? Football or academics?

I’m genuinely shocked FSU doesn’t crack the top 20

I thought that too.

How does smu have a bigger fanbase than we do?

Big10 schools are located in states that have something in common. On purpose probably.

As you may know, South Mcgregor was Greek row for a long time. Today, they reside at Bayou Oaks. What’s the status of Greek life on campus? It’s it thriving?

Let’s see average home attendance this year. SMU Boulevard is popping.

Yup, UH made them close the independent greek houses and made them rent out generic glorified dorms as their new houses. UH is always trying to monetize everything. They killed tailgating too, with this model (the Pavilion broken promise, but hey you can pay them to set up a tent and tables and chairs). That’s why I was opposed to the freshman mandate, it seemed like a money grab at the time, more than trying to help the traditional UH student.
